Eliza sat at the piano. She set her fingers gently on the keys and played a soft note. As she reached the middle of the scale, she began to sing quietly to herself.

"Un, deux, trois-" She broke off, tears running down her cheeks. Taking a deep breath, she began again.

"Un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq-" Again, she broke off, crying quietly. Tears continued to pour down her face, but she hesitantly set her hands back on the piano. Once again, she began to sing.

"Un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq, six, sept, huit, neuf-" With a dissonant chord, she collapsed on the piano, sobbing into her arms, memories of her son flooding her mind.

Philip interrupted her with his own version of the scale, changing the melody.

"Un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq, six, sept, huit, neuf," He sang, playing the last note higher.

Eliza smiled. "Good." Then demonstrated her original song.

"Sept, huit, neuf," Philip repeated.

"Sept, huit neuf," Eliza corrected him.

He frowned. "Sept, huit, neuf."

"Sept, huit, neuf."

"Sept huit neuf."

She laughed, then sang the scale in English, Philip joining her.

"One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine!"
