"Where are we going?" I asked quietly. Cai Xu Kun was holding my arm and walking me somewhere. The sky was already getting darker, especially since it wasn't spring yet. I could only see Cai Xu Kun's silhouette walking in front of me.

"Somewhere," he answered vaguely. I nodded numbly. Tonight, Cai Xu Kun was like a sanctuary. As long as I was away from them, I would be okay. I unconsciously fingered the scar. Cai Xu Kun's gaze dropped sharply to my arm, and I immediately stopped. I felt a bit guilty after he found out that I hadn't actually caught my arm 'on a wire'. We seemed to finally reach our destination. Xu Kun stopped in his tracks, and I had to force myself to stop before colliding into his back.

"Where are we?" I looked around. I didn't know where we were. It was some sort of hill, with grass sticking out here and there. Cai Xu Kun, silent as always, motioned for me to sit. He sat down next to me.

"I..." Cai Xu Kun scratched sheepishly at the nape of his neck, "...don't really know why I brought you here, but it's comforting. If you ever need a place to run away from your...troubles, you can come here."

"It's a barren hill," I say, trying not to laugh. "What makes it so special?" Cai Xu Kun didn't look offended. He looked up at the sky and smiled mysteriously.

"Wait." And so we waited. He clearly didn't want to see a sunset, because the sun had already set long ago. The sky went from dark blue to indigo to inky black. And then I saw it. The first star appeared like a pinprick of light. I stared up at it in wonder. Before I knew it, so many more appeared.

"Wow," I breathed. There was nothing else I could say. The sight left me speechless. I could sense Cai Xu Kun smiling, even though I couldn't see him. I was all eyes for the glittering sky above us.

"I come here when I'm feeling down," Cai Xu Kun admits. "It's my quiet place."

"Wow," I repeated, now turning to look at him. The light of the stars and the moonlight made him glow like some sort of celestial being. It highlighted his flawless facial features and turned his brown hair a silvery gray. My heartbeat suddenly quickened.

"You can come whenever you need to." His gaze turned faraway. I wondered what he was thinking about. So that's exactly what I asked.

"What are you thinking about?" His glazed eyes suddenly blinked and focused. He bit his lip. "It's ok. I'll listen. It's the least I can do after your help." I smiled encouragingly. He paused when he met my eyes.

"I wanted to a sing when I grew up," he sighed.

"Why the past tense?" I tilt my head. "You sing so well." He looked away and flushed at the compliment.

"Me and my friend shared dreams of becoming idols and debuting together," he continued. His expression was forlorn. I felt a tug of sympathy for him. "But they-I-" he shook his head as if trying to get rid of bad memories. "They took advantage of me, and in the end, I realized that it was all so silly." He chuckled coldly. "Debuting as an idol? Stupid." He covered his face with both his hands.

"It's not silly," I murmured. Who wouldn't want to become an idol? Especially someone with such musical talent. Sure, he was a prickly cactus, but Xu Kun could definitely sing. "Did they ever debut? Your friend, I mean." I was pretty sure I knew the answer. Cai Xu Kun's face darkened.

"No," he answered stiffly. He's lying, I'm sure. He wouldn't feel so angry if they hadn't debuted. I wondered who it was. Briefly, jokingly, I considered Autumn. I snorted in my head. As if. Autumn debuted literally in middle school. I decided to drop the topic and continue stargazing. It was such a pretty sight. Enough to make me forget what happened earlier. Almost enough. I lay down on the soft surface and began singing.

"天边撕破黑暗 的黎明将所有存在 变纯白..." (The dawn that tears through the darkness in the horizon turns everything existing into pure white.) Cai Xu Kun looks up.

"为了见到你翻 山越岭然后笑着说 'it will be ok'," he sings. (I climb over mountains to see you and then I smile as I say "It will be ok".) We sing the rest of the song together in harmony. I surprise Cai Xu Kun by rapping as well. I smirk, remembering Justin's lessons.

Please don't wake up from this magnificent dream
I won't be afraid
I'll accompany you and clear away all the mist
Ah

Ah

It's ok!
There's no time to waste
Even the fleeting image is extremely precious
No fear of the distance
Only willing to fulfill the dreams that you had imagined
Bringing you into my world right now
To experience blessedness and wonder
Seeing you quietly smiling at me
Then it will be ok!

We both drew out a long breath after the last note faded.

"I think you should keep pursuing your dream, Kun Kun." I tried to make the atmosphere a little lighter by throwing in the nickname. Cai Xu Kun didn't react to it, as if I'd been calling him that his entire life.

He looked directly into my eyes. "Yeah. Maybe I should."

A/N:

➻ Omg I'm so sorry for publishing late (aGain!)

I thought that summer meant I had more time to do stuff, but nOpe. I'm at dance for eight hours a day, and I have to rehearse and practice the choreography we learn each day (for three classes). I kinda suck at memorization, so it's extremely time consuming and nerve-wracking (we get scored 😭). I hope that after the performance I'll be able to take a break and write some more (or else my brain cells are seriously screwed).
