Your dad is a successful businessman. He's not around a lot, he never was, and truthfully, you like it better that way. You've never been very close to him, partially because he never really showed much interest in you, but mostly because it's just better for you to not be too close to him because that way he can't hurt you as much. Ever since you started university, you really only see him maybe once a year.

You've been dating Shawn for nearly two years now, and he's only met your father once. Luckily for you, that initial meeting went well, and for whatever reason, Shawn thinks pretty highly of your dad, and vice versa. Your dad is great at first impressions and tricking people into believing he's a better person than he really is. That's pretty much his entire MO, and you're used to it by now.

"I couldn't come because I had an event for work." You explain to your dad for what seems like the hundredth time, but it doesn't seem to be getting through to him.

"It was important to your brother, Y/n. It was his senior game." Your dad says, then adds, "You should have been there to support him. It was more important than your work event anyway."

The truth was that it wasn't important to your brother. You had actually called him the week before when you found out you weren't going to make it. He told you that he understood that your work thing was really important, and he didn't mind that you weren't able to make it to his game.

You already felt bad enough about missing the game, you didn't need your dad to bring it up again and again.

"He got MVP." Your dad tells you.
"I know, dad." You say, sighing.

"Are you giving me attitude?" Your dad asks. That line is probably his favorite line, also a line you've come to hate with a passion.
"What? No." Your voice rises accidentally before you can control it.

"You had better watch it." He warns.
"I'm sorry." You apologize, even though you know you did nothing wrong.

"Y/n, I don't know what the hell you think you are now that you're dating some famous kid. But you need to know your place." He says, his voice cold and gruff and domineering.

"I know, dad." You force your voice to be steady, but not unkind.

"Honestly, he seems like he's smart and successful. I don't know why he's wasting his time with you anyway." He says about Shawn, before brushing past you, not even bothering to hear what you have to say in response. When he moves past you, you see Shawn frozen in the doorway. You hadn't seen him earlier because your dad was blocking him from your view. Your dad still doesn't know that Shawn heard anything because his back was turned toward Shawn the entire time.

The fire in Shawn's eyes lasts only for a few seconds, but that's long enough for you to know he heard enough and he's pissed. He seems torn between checking to see if you're okay and chasing down your dad to give him a piece of his mind. He eventually decides to stop at you.

"Y/n," he's speaking slowly, almost like he's still trying to process everything.
"Shawn, just forget it." You plead. It takes everything you have to keep your voice even.
"What the fuck? No." He says.

You can feel the tears start to form near your eyes, and you swallow hard before repeating yourself. "Shawn, I said forget it."

"I'm not forgetting anything. That was so--so--" He's at a loss for words. You push past him, entering the kitchen where your brother is sitting at the counter.
"I heard dad," He starts, ready to comfort you, but Shawn appears a moment later causing your brother to pause. It only takes him a second to realize that Shawn heard your dad too.

Shawn had no idea that your father spoke to you that way, and there was definitely a reason you never told him in the two years you were together. You can practically feel him fuming now. No doubt, your brother can see it too.
