Maybe after you I'll end up being one more
Who you don't fall in love with
{Chapter 13. Dicen}
~Olivia~
I nervously stand in the gym facing 40 girls. Half of them were not even in a sports outfit but in tight jeans and crop tops with faces heavily painted in makeup. The other half looked bored or nervous and were all around the same age as me. Everyone was chatting while they waited for tryouts to begin, or more specifically, when Julian would show up.
I paced around tapping the pen on my board repeatedly. I bit my bottom lip anxiously, knowing that somehow and sometime now, I'd have to break the news to everyone that Julian wasn't coming.
He wouldn't come, there was no possibility that he would show up. Not after yesterday.
I mentally groaned and scanned the sheet that had every girl's names. The girls talked with one another excitedly while some others were impatient.
A girl wearing a flashy yellow dress (how are you even supposed to tryout in that?!) asked while she played with her short pixie hair, "Um, like, when is Julian coming?"
I glanced up from my board and frowned at her then I turned towards the large group, "Can I have everyone's attention please!"
Suddenly everyone's eyes are on me and my breath hitched at all the attention.
"I just wanted to thank you all for coming. You are all very strong, independent women that can do whatever they push themselves to do." I knew I was delaying their questions as much as I could, "I know that this team will be unique and the very best out of all the others—"
"Where's JULIAN!" A girl shouted, her voice echoing around the gym. Whispers rose until everyone was screaming in rage. I put my palm to the side of my temple, feeling my headache grow. Everyone was yelling, fighting with one another without reason.
"Why isn't he here?!" Someone shouted.
"I don't have the patience for this crap!" Another screeched.
"I have a nail appointment!" A girl yelled in anger.
I looked around the gym with panicked eyes and tried to answer everyone's rapid questions but every time my voice raised someone would cut me off.
"Ladies," Someone cooed from the door of the gym and I turned around instantly, not believing my eyes when I saw Julian casually lean against the door, "Why all the fuss?"
The room went quiet and most of the girls stared at him with hunger in their eyes. Okay, ew.
He looked anywhere but at me and I sighed thankfully. I don't think I could've handled it. He strode next to me and every step he took a girl would sigh dreamily or fix their makeup in seconds.
"Well, let's get this tryout started," He clapped his hands together startling a few of the girls. Then he took off his blue jacket and black beanie, so that he was only left in loose shorts and a white T-shirt showing off his arms.
Some girls in heels began shuffling awkwardly and others in inappropriate clothes for this occasion walked away and sat sadly on the bleachers. While the girls walked away one by one I could see the group lessen. In a matter of minutes, I was left with 15 girls.
I shook my head and ignored the warmth radiating off of Julian behind me.
"Going to do this without me, eh," He whispers and his warm breath fans my bare neck. I shiver but I don't answer. We needed to talk, it's bound to happen sooner or later and I'm going to make it sooner. That's it, I'm talking to him after tryouts.
Julian's claps his hands together again and addressed the girls, "Okay, let's start off with some step-shots."
Soon enough I was left with exhausting girls, sweating and playing in teams against one another. I wrote a bunch of things down and smiled when I saw how talented most of them were. Julian was running along with them as they did their laps while shouting encouraging words.
"And... Let's take a 5," He called and the 15 girls gasped in air while they walked to their water bottles. The girls sitting on the benches whistle and coo Julian's name but he just winks and heads to his own water bottle.
"Olivia!" I turn around to see Blaire walking in carrying her laptop.
"Blaire?" I laugh, "What are you doing here?"
She shrugs, "No idea, just wanted to drop by. I just came from the Science club."
I nod my head in understanding, "Well we're almost done, if that's what you mean."
She nods her head and then leans in.
"By the way," She whispers, "I tried texting you today, why weren't you answering?"
I groan in embarrassment, "Let's just say my phone is all over my room now."
"What happened, you wanna talk?" She asks, fixing her glasses.
"No, at least not now," I sigh, rubbing my eyes.
"Tomorrow. Meet me at the beach?" Blaire says, pouting her lips, "Please?"
I laugh, "Yeah, sure."
"I got to go, my mom's here. We can shop for a new phone while we're at it," She chuckles but I don't. I wave at her and she walks away.
After a couple more drills, I call all the girls into a line.
Julian stands next to me breathing deeply but I focus my attention on the list in front of me.
"Tessa, Lillian, Rebeca, Polly and Dru, I'm sorry guys but you didn't make the cut," I announce looking up at five sad faces, "Better luck next year though."
I put the clipboard away and look at my team, "And the rest of you... You're in."
The ten girls squeal and some run to hug me, I giggle with them, feeling their excitement.
I turn around with a large smile to find Julian, but he was already gone. He just left.
