~Chapter Nine: До свидания – Dasvidania~

Almost a full week of hiding my gradually-returning magic and pretending like nothing has changed passes before I deem my magic levels high enough to make my escape. Unfortunately, it is also on that day that neither Perun nor Hors leaves the house, forcing me to waste an entire day mentally feeding my paranoia. Do they know?

Whether they know or not, though, it is Tuesday – or so the calendar tells me – and Perun has work to do for our pantheon that he cannot escape from without damning us all, even if he would rather spend his time here, as he has stated at least five times over breakfast. Despite his complaints, though, the bastard finally does leave shortly after finishing his breakfast. I end up helping with the dishes again, but not because Perun did not offer. Apparently, I do a better job at cleaning than the king god. It feels good to beat that idiotic god, though I would much rather beat him at something that actually matters.

After finishing the dishes, Hors leaves me alone, likely under the assumption that I will either retreat up to my room for the morning or read something in the living room. However, I will be doing neither. For the last week, ever since I realize my magic was returning, I began watching Hors' routine.

Ever since our first morning spent playing games, Hors has taken that as an excuse to challenge me to something every morning, and I typically accept. However, I also know that, before coming to my room to play a game, he spends about an hour reading. I do not know what it is he is reading, but every time I pass by his open door, there are books and sheets of paper scattered around his bed with him in standing by the foot of it. The scene would look much more at home on a table, but I suspect Hors does not want to give me a chance to read over his shoulder. That, or he is a no-business at the dinner table person.

I do end up climbing the stairs to go to my room, but I only stay in there for less than a couple of minutes. After all, there is nothing in here that I need to take with me, as I have my own things in my safe houses and the pocket watch is too dangerous to carry around, so I will have to wait for it to come to me on its own. Besides, taking anything with me when teleporting would just take up more magic than what I already have. If I tried to teleport more items than I could handle, I might end up tearing myself apart mid-teleport.

Learned that one the hard way.

All I grab is the most recent book Hors gave me off one of my nightstands. It is a poorly-written Egyptian mythology book, but it is still funny enough that I do not mind the idea of taking it with me and wasting the tiny amount of magic this small item would take. With it in hand, I head back downstairs as quietly as possible. Not wanting to pass by the open bedroom again to give any warning to Hors that something might be up, I go straight for the front door instead of the one in the kitchen.

With the return of my magic came the return of my magical sight, allowing me to see that, rather than the windows being the weakest point, the doors are actually the least reinforced part of the house, likely because Perun and Hors are coming and going frequently. However, that also unfortunately means that sneaking out is rather hard, since the doors make more noise than the windows.

Though, I suppose that only matters when there are not wards that will alert them the moment I try to escape.

Taking a deep breath, I grab ahold of as much magic as I dare while still leaving enough for the outer wards and the teleportation, before grasping the handle and yanking the door open. It almost does not budge – the warding is impressive, I begrudgingly admit – but a directed burst of magic forces the wards to yield long enough for the door to open just wide enough for me to slip through. As I am slipping out, I can hear the sudden burst of movement from down the hall. My heart jumps into my throat and I take off running.
