Theory-

I don't really know why I think this. But I like to think that Merlin saves as many druids and other sorcerers than he dares from Uther's wrath. But that he can only usually save the children because they're smaller and easier to sneak out. And that if he can't help them, he'll knock out the guards and talk to them for a while. Apologising that he can't save them. But he keeps them company for a little while, and brings them a potion to stop them feeling the fire or the axe the next morning.

Some of them don't take it. Saying that if they're going to die for being who they are. Then they didn't want to cheat. Merlin stays with those ones longer. But leaves the bottle out infront of him as they talk. Some of them change their mind by the time he goes to leave and take the potion from him.
