The walk to the stables seemed arduously long this time; it felt like hours before Y/N had finally left the limits of the city. After leaving the familiar sight of Asgard behind, she continued to follow the path, debating whether to turn back with every step she took. She came up on the stables and stopped a little ways down the road, pausing for a moment before she took a deep breath and approached.
Using one of the side entrances to draw less attention to herself, she entered quietly. The regular stable hands were there, one tending to a pair of white mares and another to a dappled stallion. They didn't seem to notice her as she walked in, nervously glancing around for any sign of the prince. She checked the stall where his mare usually was but found that she was gone.
She was already ready to call it quits and leave, coming up with excuses to as why it would be best to, but instead, she went through the stall and out the opened back door. The land in front of her was spread in a wide open flatland, intricate gates housing a large number of steeds that were peacefully grazing on the tall grass. Not too far away on the top of a small rise was Loki, his back to her as he petted his black mare's neck.
Gathering her courage, Y/N started towards him. The rustle of the grass beneath her feet alerted the horse and she turned her head towards the girl, letting out a puff of air. Y/N froze, waiting for Loki to do the same.
"I thought I told you that I was not to be bothered," he said, already a dangerous edge in his smooth voice. Before she had a chance to respond, however, he turned to face her, stopping as he realized who it was. Immediately his expression darkened and he whipped an arm out towards her, his index finger pointing to the stables.
"Get out."
"Loki, I—"
"No! I don't want to hear it. Get out of my sight." His voice was cold, making her flinch back slightly. But she was here, and it had already taken far too much willpower to get herself in this spot. Steeling herself against his anger, she shook her head.
"I came out here for your help," she started, hoping desperately that he would listen. "I am just as lost as you are, and all I want to do is figure out what to do." He said nothing, only glaring at her as a soft breeze blew through his cloak. "Please," she pleaded. There was a long silence before he spoke again.
"Fine."
"What?"
"I said fine, are you deaf?" His mare nudged him with her nose. "And what do you propose we do?"
"I, erm-" She hadn't really expected to get this far. She wanted more time to think this out, but the look on Loki's face told her that he wasn't going to wait much longer. "So it wasn't you? You didn't, you know- make the bridge..."
"Of course not. You think I would purposely do something like that?" He seemed offended at the mere thought of it. "You haven't told anyone of this." He glowered down at her. "Have you?" She shook her head again, this time more fervently.
"No, I have told no one."
"Good. Keep it that way. I've already spent enough time trying to keep this damned thing quiet and I would rather not have to expend any more energy."
"So... we can both agree that what happened on the bridge last night was real...right?"
"...Yes."
"And that for some reason, the universe decided that we were meant to be." Gods, saying it out loud only made it worse.
"Love is for children, Y/N," He sneered. "What reason do I have to believe in all of this nonsense?"
"Because you've seen it happen before." Y/N scowled, returning his expression. "And I'm really not much younger than you." He seemed indifferent. "But you can't seriously brush off something like this as if it's nothing!"
