I turn to look at where she was pointing and I see a man holding a torch and lighting some fire. Even after fifty years I think I would be able to recognize him anywhere. He sees me looking and I see him double checking again, as if him too had to make sure I wasn't an illusion.

"Ruby!" he yells

"Fernando?" I call out to him, not believing my eyes

"Mi amor! Mexico, 1959" he says, and I know he stills remember me and he kept his promise to always love me, just like I had kept mine.

Music starts to play and I can't help but remember the night I had given myself to him, how he had been the first person I had ever sang to. So I sing to him now.

Can you hear the drums Fernando
I remember long ago another starry night like this
In the firelight Fernando
You were humming to yourself and softly strumming your guitar
I could hear the distant drums
And sounds of bugle calls were coming from afar

I start making my way to the stairs so that I could get closer to him.

They were closer now Fernando
Every hour every minute seemed to last eternally
I was so afraid Fernando
We were young and full of life and none of us prepared to die
And I'm not ashamed to say
The roar of guns and cannons almost made me cry

I start stepping down the stairs. I love how he sings some parts with me.

There was something in the air that night
The stars were bright, Fernando
They were shining there for you and me
For liberty, Fernando
Though I never thought that we could lose
There's no regret
If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, Fernando
If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, Fernando

Now that I reached the end of the stairs . He slowly starts walking in my direction and I him. The people slowly make way for us to pass. Everybody was memorize and intrigued of how we knew each other. As Sophie had done before, now it was my turn to take the stage. My eyes never diverting from his.

Now we're old and grey Fernando
And since many years I haven't seen a rifle in your hand
Can you hear the drums Fernando
Do you still recall the frightful night we crossed the Rio Grande
I can see it in your eyes
How proud you were to fight for freedom in this land

He takes my arms, the tingles from his touch spread to my arm. Even after all this time, my body still reacted to his touch. We dance together as we sing, both too lost in memories.

There was something in the air that night
The stars were bright, Fernando
They were shining there for you and me
For liberty, Fernando
Though I never thought that we could lose
There's no regret
If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, Fernando
There was something in the air that night
The stars were bright, Fernando
They were shining there for you and me
For liberty, Fernando
Though I never thought that we could lose
There's no regret

We stop dancing and I enjoy our proximity to caress his face. His face follows my touch, both too needy to feel the other.

If I had to do the same againI would, my friend, Fernando

We join our hands, too immerse in the feeling of each other.

Yes, if I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, Fernando

As the song comes to an end he his holding me in his arms like he used to, so many decades ago, and we are so close to each other that I can't help but inch my face closer and kiss him. He kisses me back just as fiercely.

"Grandma?" I hear Sophie call

Hesitantly I break the kiss and turn to look at my granddaughter. She was looking at us with a look that equal shock and surprise in her face.
