Infernal Infidelities

... an intrigue for a Wattpad Halloween Challenge.

It is nights like this, I tire of the city,
I tire of me.

I think of your face, the moonlight
Cascading gently over rooftops.
The shadow serves as your disguise,
Your secret love the lantern that moves us--
Guiding your hand to mine almost nervously
Weaving the intricate spiderweb even more tightly.

It is one thing to make conversation at a party, to
Make love in places forever unseen to other eyes,
Not unlike vampires retreating to a coffin.
It is something else entirely when my heart beats in panic
Hammering its way through my skull, and I wait
For the inevitable, much like
A rooftop Cinderella who knows every carriage
Becomes a pumpkin.

I feel the heaviness of my own tombstone before
The shy curve of your candy lips meet mine.
Below, children in costumes are a distraction,
One that gives this moment permission.

"Trick Or Treat"--
The voices sound in discordant unison,
Making your timid words
Play like a music box,
Creating a more beautiful melody.

"I love you."
The whispered words are simple,
The reality is not and
Denial has been my companion for far too long.
An owl gives its hoot of wisdom we do not obey, and
I know it is a moment precious and haunted.

"I love you forever."
You are not mine, and I am not yours,
Yet this has been my life's one constant.
I pause, the beauty in the hesitation stunning
And utterly foreboding.

"You will either save me or destroy me,"
You barely whisper,
Looking down over the city from twenty stories.
I squeeze your hand,
A union that will never be broken.

"It's not as simple as one or the other."
The sky dazzles as you gather me in your arms,
Pulling me closer.
Somewhere, a witch's cauldron boils,
Silently signifying the beginning of the end.
