Worse Timing

"Hello?" I heard the rough familiar voice say.
I cleared my throat.

"Hey—Alexsi. This is Kaei..." I heard shuffling in the background.

"Yea Jace just told me that you'd be calling me soon." He sounded like he was occupied with something.

"Did he tell you what about?" It would make this so much easier if he did.

"No he didn't. He said that you would explain everything once you called... So can you go ahead and start explaining?" he replied and I could hear the irritation starting in his voice. The noise in the background began to pick up and it sounded like he dropped something.

"Um are you busy? Because there's a lot of noise going on in the background and I can just call back la-"

He cut me off "Yes I am busy but I can still talk to you. It's called multi tasking. I know that you're not too familiar with that concept."

I scoffed and rolled my eyes.

"Alexsi I don't have time for that right now. I'm stressing out so I need you to be quiet and listen. I know you're not real familiar with either of those but try real hard okay?" I could just see his jaw tightening in my head making me laugh and relax a little.

I heard him huff "Kaei what is it that you need. I have stuff that needs to get done."

"I think I left something very very important to me in your car yesterday. I never take it off so I'm not sure how it just fell off, but it means the world to me, so I'm really desperate to find it. Would you mind going to check for me? It's a gold cha-"

"Gold charm bracelet with about 8 charms on it?" He asked cutting me off.

I perked up in my seat feeling slightly relieved and surprised. "Y-Yea! How did you know? Did you already have it before I called Alexsi?" I asked rolling my eyes at the fact that he let me go through my whole spill and allowed me to be scared, thinking that it was actually lost.

"Well while you were making your speech I went ahead and put down what I was doing to look for it and it was right under the seat."

I just ignored the sly comment and let out an audible sigh and laughter of relief. "Thank you soooo much Alexsi! You don't know how much I appreciate this, thank you! You can just give it to Jace and then I'll get it from him later." I said

"No."

"No?" I asked confused "what do you mean no? This is not the time to play with me Alexsi, I swear to goodness. Give it to Jace." I told him already feeling my body temperature creep up.

"No. Where are you now? I'm bringing it to you." He said matter of factly.

"You're what? No, no, no." I said kind of feeling bad about almost going off on him but still not wanting to see him face to face any time soon.

"You're busy and I don't want to intrude any further than I already have. Jace will get it to me." I continued hoping that he'd realize he had better things to do and leave my bracelet with Jace.

"Listen. I'm not going back and forth with you. I said what I was going to do and I'm a man of my word." I could hear the irritation in his voice "So I'm asking one more time. Where are you?"

I bit my lip looking around me as everyone had started looking at the menu and were chatting, but Zione and Luciano were still keeping an ear close. They were so the overprotective brothers that my momma never birthed. The last thing I wanted was them asking questions about Alexsi as there was nothing worth telling. At all.

I scooted away from the table walking to the corner of the room so that I could have privacy, or as close to it as I could get.

"Fine. You win. Meet me at First Watch. Text me when you pull up so that I can meet you outside. And... thank you." I hung up the phone and went back to my seat at the table hopping into the conversation.
