Melissa Jordan is a third-year resident at Chicago Med after relocating from her hometown to begin a new life. After a rocky start in life, believing her father had died only to discover he was a crooked cop in the Chicago PD, she learned to distrust everyone, including her own family, and built a wall to protect herself from being hurt again, which left her lonely.
However, after a firefighter is brought into the ER surrounded by his firefighter family, she realises that not everyone is bad; after saving his life, Herrmann returns to the hospital to thank her for saving his life, and that's when she notices a spark between them both, which scares her because she hasn't felt anything for someone in a long time; however, after Melissa is trapped under a building collapse she realises that her fear of falling in love is stupid especially when she finds out Herrmann is the one that saved her.
