Alex's pov.

After a long and draining day at school, the final bell rang, signifying the end of another mundane day. Most students would welcome the freedom that came with the school day ending, but for me, the impending return to my anxious and unpredictable home life dampened any sense of relief. Sofia, my usual pillar of support, was unable to accompany me today as she had agreed to babysit the lively Washington twins, leaving me to face the turmoil that awaited me at home all on my own. A wave of unease washed over me as I trudged along the familiar path back home, each step heavy with the weight of impending confrontation. The thought of encountering his wrath, with its cutting words and intense glare, sent shivers down my spine, yet the ingrained sense of loyalty to Sofia tethered me to face the storm.

As I approached our house, my eyes caught sight of the two unusual black SUVs parked in front, their presence starkly contrasting with the serene and tranquil surroundings of our quiet neighborhood. Despite the gnawing unease in the pit of my stomach, I summoned all the courage within me to forge ahead and confront whatever awaited me on the other side of the front door. Faint murmurs and voices emanated from within, mingling with the familiar timbre of my father's voice but interspersed with unfamiliar tones that set my nerves on edge even further.

Steeling myself, I turned the key in the lock and stepped inside, greeted only by an eerie silence that seemed to reverberate around the empty walls. Striving to maintain an air of composure, I carefully set down my backpack, the weight of its contents suddenly feeling heavier than ever. A sudden movement caught my eye, and my heart skipped a beat as a large Doberman materialized from the living room, its presence adding an entirely new layer of uncertainty and tension to the already palpable atmosphere. The unexpected sight of the imposing dog only served to heighten my apprehension, signaling the brewing storm that lay ahead as I braced myself for the unknown challenges that awaited me within the confines of my home.

The Doberman began to walk up to me, and a sense of unease crept over me. I instinctively started to back away slowly because its intimidating presence didn't convey a sense of friendliness that put me at ease. Its intense gaze made me realize the potential danger I might be in, urging me to retreat cautiously.

As all it did was fixate its eyes on me from a distance, a sudden sense of relief swept over me. Just then, an unfamiliar voice rang out, calling the dog by the name Zeus. In response to the call, the dog obediently turned away, diffusing the tension that had been building up inside me. I couldn't help but release a shaky breath, feeling a momentary reprieve before what was yet to come.

With a trembling heart, I mustered the courage to ascend the stairs, bracing myself for what might await me. Suddenly, my dad's urgent voice pierced through the uneasy silence, beckoning me to the living room. His tone was not one of anger but of genuine fear, sending a chill down my spine.

Despite the impending sense of doom that seemed to linger in the air, I pushed aside my fear and proceeded towards the living room. Every step I took felt like a weight upon my chest, my heart beating frantically as I battled to conceal my rising panic. I was on the verge of a nerve-wracking encounter, yet I steeled myself, determined not to show any signs of weakness.
