8.My Mom

I better introduce you to my mom now. Her name is Sarah Ling and she's awesome, but her childhood was a bit sad. She grew up with her grandma because her mom would get sick easily. She had to learn how to defend herself early, she was bullied for being different. I guess it was because of her eyes, they were shocking green. Or it was because they were all jerks. I'll never know.

To keep my mom from worrying about her mother or sad from the bullies, her grandma would teach her how to bake. Together with her mom, they  run a bakery called, "Sugar Hour". It's really cool, the walls are decorated to look like there's sprinkles and icing dripping. There's a giant chocolate fountain in the center, always surrounded by little kids.

One year after they opened, "Sugar Hour" my mom had to attend the funeral of an old friend. There she met my dad. He was supposedly the funeral director and a friend. They became acquainted and over the months they dated. Soon my mom was expecting me. But two days later after the news, he went 'missing'. Great timing, am I right? Not.

My mom always believed that he left for a good reason, but I just thought the reason was that he was a dirty cheater. I wondered if my mom ever knew he was a god.

She stared at me through the mist screen, taking in the information. I was okay, I wasn't hurt, and I was somehow communicating with her. I looked at her appearance, it changed over night. My mom looked like a mess. Her usual glossy black hair was all over the place, unbrushed and tangled. She was as pale as a ghost and thin from not eating. Her green eyes were dull like a doll's and red from crying, her usual spark gone. She was dressed in her uniform for work, but I remembered today was Sunday. "Sugar Hour" didn't open on Sundays. I cringed, her usual neat appearance was taken over by this.

"Mom, are you okay? You don't look to good, you have candy in your hair," I said. She rolled her eyes, a hint of her old self coming back.

"No! I have candy in my hair, I haven't ate since yesterday, and I didn't sleep for hours! I'm fine!" She put her hands on her hips and frowned. "But where have you been! We are all worried sick! You promised you'll be home in thirty minutes, but it's been 24 hours! Your great-grandma is freaking out! She keeps saying that you've been attacked by monsters! And what the heck is this thing we are speaking into?" She observed the screen and started screaming her head off. "That's it! I've gone mental!"

I couldn't help but think, Now you realize that your daughter magically appeared in front of you in a mist screen? Seriously, you should have started screaming ages ago!

My grandma came rushing into the kitchen. Unlike my mom, she looked neat and stable, but with dark circles around her eyes. She took one look at my screaming mother and me nervously waving in a screen......and smiled. Crazy, right? Most people would have called the police or mental hospital or something. But Grandma? No. She'd be all, "Everyones gone crazy! Now who wants a cookie?" She's awesome.

"Well, I knew this day would come! Julie's finally mature enough to join the others," She sniffled into a tissue. "I'm so proud!"

And then I was all like, "Gurl, what are you talking about?" and I snapped my fingers in Z-formation. Nah, but I did say, "Grandma, are you okay? Did you take your pills this morning?" She looked at me like I was insane.

"You are a demigod, aren't you?" I nodded slowly. I couldn't help but be suspicious. How did my grandma know I was half god when my own mother didn't?

She slammed her palms together. "That settles it! I'll be sending some stuff to you in a few days. I have to find some drachmas! And don't worry dearie, I know where Camp Half-Blood is! Now you take care of yourself now, and don't forget to write! I'll take care of your mother, bye!" And with that, she swiped the screen away. I stared at the lake thinking, who is my grandmother?
