You didn't react very much when the time came.

We were sitting together in the dirt, overlooking the city on a hill.

It was one of those rare nights when the odds aligned in my favor, an evening free of work. We talked for hours, literally, and inevitably, the conversation took a serious turn.

I found myself opening up in a way I never had, to anyone. I told you of how I'd been working since I was thirteen, of mom and I's financial struggles, and with tears in my eyes, all the nights I'd gone to bed without food in my stomach and without motivation in my heart to rise in the morning.

I'd never cried in front of you before, but I thought I saw your eyes glistening as you scooted closer and wrapped me up.

That night, for the first time in a long time, that pit in my stomach filled.

I didn't feel alone.
