Bathory

In the aftermath of Maven's revelations I found myself in Slender's study alongside him, examining book after book to see what I could do to help. I hadn't realized just how extensive or how ancient some of these books were; I also hadn't realized this was where Kagekao and Sadie spent most of their time, as well as Lacy, buried in the rows of shelves as they read from old tomes. I could hear Kagekao's soft Japanese through the shelf as he read to Sadie, a small smile on her face when I heard her giggle.

"Anything new?"

I whipped around, a book in my hand that was stopped by Jeff's as he kept me from bashing him with it. Bastard was even quieter than me sometimes.

"Christ Jeffrey," I hissed, snickering playfully as I stepped on his toes, "no, nothing yet."

"Why do you have such a heavy foot?!" He wheezed, nursing his toe while I replaced the book.

"I've got to hit hard when I'm in the field, can you blame me?" I laughed, motioning for him to follow me while I walked towards the door.

"Guess I can't," he laced his arm around my waist as we walked, "you haven't eaten in a while, did you want to go out soon?"

"I was going to ask if you'd want to, I'm starving," I laughed, watching him smile as I tucked up against him, "I'll go get changed and be back down, I don't want to ruin this shirt."

"Just wear white like me and bleach it!" He called as I trotted up the steps.

"Why do that when I can wear black?!"

He rolled his eyes before I could escape him, making my way up to the third floor and halfway down the hall before I heard someone talking; it was Persephone's voice, but she paused every now and then and talked low, like she didn't want to be heard. It was hard to escape my supersonic hearing though and I crept up to her door, listening intently while Maven appeared beside me.

"She's alright, things are a little rough lately for everyone but she's handling it like a pro," she paused, a small, static-filled voice audible, "oh, really? It's been like two months though. My mom's still milking it isn't she?"

"Is she on the phone?" Maven whispered and I nodded, my brows furrowed.

"As per usual," she laughed, "I'll talk to you soon Owen, take it easy."

"Owen?!" I mouthed out to Maven, watching her shake her head with wide eyes.

The door flew open suddenly and I leapt back, realizing I'd just been caught and that there was a very slim chance I'd be able to worm myself out of this, but the moment Persephone saw me her smile fell and she grimaced, knowing she'd just been caught too.

"You just heard me, didn't you?"

"Yeah, I did," I admitted, "you...were talking to Owen?"

"Yeah, he and I kept in touch after I 'disappeared'," she laughed, hooking her fingers in the air, "I don't tell him much but I let him know you're safe, that's really all he wants to know." Persephone paused, giving me a sad smile. "There's a memorial at the cemetery tonight for us. They're all hoping we'll come home soon."

"Sure they are," I laughed darkly, pulling my best friend into a hug, "don't worry about it, okay? I'm not upset, I just...wish he'd forget about me."

"It's kind of hard to forget about you when there's pictures all over town," she grinned, "I promise I haven't told him more than that. I don't want him to get involved in this either."

"Good, thank you," I squeezed her hand again before I left to my room, letting out a heavy sigh as I grabbed my black hoodie from the closet.

"You're going to go to the memorial, aren't you?" Maven asked as she lounged on my bed.
