Bathory

The sound of voices pulled me back to the waking world, soft and hushed that slowly grew louder as I came back around. I was in the infirmary while people crowded around me, everything a flash of colors until I could finally focus. Jeff passed in front of me, still covered in blood while Slender and Doctor Smiley conversed across the way. Someone must've noticed that I was awake because all of a sudden Jeff was at my side, panic in his eyes as I brushed him off so that I could sit up.

"I...wow," I wheezed, "did Jane knock me out?"

"Yeah," he admitted, "are you okay? I-I knocked her off of you and you were bleeding and-"

"I'm okay, I'm okay," I put my hands on his cheeks, feeling him lean into my palms to calm himself, "they...grabbed Owen..."

"We're aware," Slender admitted as he approached the bed, "you have a major concussion, you just fed so it should fade soon, but please take it slow."

"What are we going to do about it?" I asked, letting Jeff help me out of bed while I used him as a crutch.

"We don't know where Zalgo is located or else I would attempt a retrieval," he shook his head, "the most we can do is wait and see what his next ploy will be."

"Fuck that," I wheezed, "we have to go get him."

"We will, Bathory. We just have to wait."

I huffed, looking away from Slender as Jeff helped me out of the room and into the foyer; Persephone seemed to have been waiting for us as she jumped up from her spot on the steps beside Ben to meet me. I couldn't help but notice their hands clasped, her knuckles white as she gripped his fingers tightly.

"Batty? Oh my God you look like hell," she whispered as she wrapped her arms around me, her voice shaking, "Jeff filled us in, Jane took Owen?!"

"Yeah, and you bet your ass the first thing I do when I'm not stumbling around like I'm drunk is going to be finding him and getting him home," I growled, "how long was I out for?"

"A few hours, it's one-ish," Ben told us, Maven appearing beside him.

"There is one thing I am worried about," she admitted, red eyes filled with concern, "the Puppeteer grabbed him, which means he might try and...do what he does."

"That would be what exactly?" I asked.

"He haunts people and undermines everything they do with subconscious commands, making them feel like their life isn't worth living until they agree to let him kill them," she explained, "it's how he feeds, without it he'd wither."

"That doesn't make me feel any better," I hissed before taking a deep breath, my head pulsating, "oh, man I need to lay down."

"Come on," Jeff wrapped his arms around my waist to keep me upright, "let's get you upstairs."

I nodded, taking a deep breath as I continued up the steps with Jeff by my side. Maven walked with us, almost like she was safeguarding me; she really was a good guardian. I reached out and gripped her hand, watching a smile cross her face before she sunk into the floor again.

"Normally I think you're not supposed to sleep on a concussion like this," Jeff chuckled as I sat down, "but since you're continuously healing I think you'll be okay."

"I could really go for a cup of coffee right now, too bad Vero's shop doesn't open until six," I grumbled, a sharp realization hitting me, "fuck, Vero! If they have Owen they might go after her!"

"Easy baby, easy," he whispered, easing me back down onto my bed, "I'll send Eyeless and Rouge to check in on her, alright? You need to stay here and focus on feeling better."
