Part IV - The Connection
The sky was pouring with heavy drops of stinging rain that splattered onto (Y/n)'s skin but still she carried on. It took great strength for the painter to row into the treacherous waves, manned with nothing but a fierce determination and growing anxiety. (Y/n)'s hands were already calloused and alight with pain when she reached the sinking ship, wobbling on the lips of the waves with cacophonous moans and bellows from the burning wood. Sailors were sprinting from their positions on deck, flailing between duty to duty to attempt to satisfy the fire's ravenous hunger as it nibbled away at the mast. Even from her faraway position, she could see a young female with onyx hair barking out orders to her crew. The princess. She felt a visible relief on her shoulders when she realised that the princess was safe. At least for now.
(Y/n)'s eyes nearly popped out of her head when she saw the jagged rocks, a curling outcropping of rock hidden in the waters made dark by dusk.
"You're about to run aground!" (Y/n) yelled, "You're about to run aground!"
The sailors did not hear her, or if they did then they showed no sign of wanting to avoid them. They continued on their efforts to try to delay the inferno spluttering over the waves. (Y/n) was conflicted. Should she continue further and risk the flames, even at the cost of her own life?
"AHOY!" (Y/n) shouted stridently, "You're going to run aground!"
There was no attention. Eventually, desperation sunk in. (Y/n) heaved a paddle into the water and flung her weight into a single enormous row. Clearing the distance between her and the ship, she got so close that the heat from the flames flared against her skin.
"ERIKA!" (Y/n) screamed with all her might, her voice shaking from the power behind the sound.
The princess paused and squinted into the flames.
"(Y/N)?" The other girl shouted, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?"
"YOU'RE GOING TO RUN A'GROUND!" (Y/n) screamed hoarsely, pointing urgently to the hidden rock outcropping that became more and more malevolent as the distance between them closed. No matter how much (Y/n) screamed and called, waving her hands around in a futile attempt to lurch the ship away as if it was as easy as batting away a pesky moth from a flame. The enormous ship of the Royal Navy rode the crest of the enormous wave and splintered mercilessly on the rocks - the sound worse than the shooting of one thousand gunshots combined with the screams of the sailors. The ship was sinking.
(Y/n) could only watch, horrified.
"Erika!" (Y/n)'s voice rang out in distress, "ERIKA!"
Tears mixed with the brine of the saltwater as it cascaded down her face. At that moment (Y/n) hated herself for ever thinking ill of the princess.
"Princess Erika, no!" (Y/n) screamed against the moist lump in her throat, "ERIKA!"
A struggling shape in the heart of the chaos sunk beneath the roaring waves, leaving only a hand falling into the dark depths. Somehow (Y/n) knew that it was her. Diving into the water, the saltwater stung her eyes as she tried hopelessly to search for the princess. There were bits of drifting flotsam everywhere, fuzzy shapes of black and grey that struck fear into her heart. She struggled in the grip of the currents and mangling tide that threatened to pull her into the darkness. (Y/n) thrashed in the water when she saw the limp figure of the princess swirling into the depths. Erika was unconscious and floating on a downward spiral to the bottom of the ocean, hooked on a giant fishermen's tackle as she spiralled downward. Her black hair a flowing mass around her face. The princess's blue dress was heavy as she tried to pull her to the surface, but then the air in her throat started to burn it raw. It took a few strong kicks and (Y/n) had hooked her arms under Erika's.
