I was told people like you were only found in stories

That ambition and bravery are fairy tale traits

I found them in you

A girl with dark clouds in her lungs

That kept her from breathing in all the way

And tasting what fresh air had to offer

And I watched as her own body tried to suffocate her

And every time she tried for another breath

No matter how many times she failed to inhale

She tried again and again and again

Those tale-worthy qualities became clear

The courage and pride of a prince

Beauty and grace of a princess

Yet ferocious and stern like a soldier

I was told people like you were only found in stories

And I am grateful I opened your book
