Chapter 5 - Intrigued

"Oi," the girl exclaimed, throwing a piece of wood in the direction of the boy on the floor, which hit him square on the head.

Rubbing his head, he asked "What was that for?" in an irritated tone.

"Wiping that smirk of your face, Mr Arrogant," she retorted.

Under his breath, he snickered at the pointless banter between the two unsuspecting teenagers, as he watched them in their pathetic attempt of handling this unusual situation.

No wonder they ignored my invitation, he thought, they’re both too stubborn.

From the darkest shadows of the cavern, the students had no idea they were being watched, but he was very aware of every move they made. As they began to search through the dusty old furniture, his carefully thought out scheme replayed in his head for the millionth time.

The invitations were sent out to all the students he’d chosen to help him achieve his ultimate goal. Among those invitations, two were sent out to the two students in front of him, who chose to ignore his request for an alliance, which has caused them to be stuck in this gloomy cavern.

As they had it within them to ignore his expectations, which honestly gave him quite a surprise, he soon figured that they might be of some use to him. However their constant quibbling was beginning to give him some doubt.

Suddenly, he sucked in a breath as he noticed the girl heading towards the wall nearest him, stopping only a few feet away from where he was standing in the shadows, as she looked at the silver logo on the almost-black stone wall.

Doing a double-take, he realised exactly what that logo was: a crack in the illusion. She called the boy over - Nate he said his name was – who at a second glance seemed slightly familiar to him.

With a flick of his wrist, an intricate web of silver lines sprouted from the logo, hiding it from sight. Nate scrutinised the wall as a look of confusion passed over the girl’s face.

It worked.

A few minutes later, the teenagers left the cavern when they found the passage in the wall. He didn’t make any attempt to stop them. He needed them involved. He wanted to draw them deeper into his plot.

"Caden," he called into the darkness of the now empty cavern.

A skinny teenager with a mop of blond hair stepped into the dim light of the wooden torches.

"Yes Master?" he answered, looking directly at him, clearly showing how intimidated he was.

"I need the Illudere. Its essential," he said, stepping from his hiding place in the shadows, making the teenager shrink back in fear, "I’m not strong enough without it. Check the rocks by the lake. You have to be quick Caden; you cannot fail me. You know exactly what will happen if you do."

"Yes sir," he replied, his voice quavering slightly before he ran through the open passage and into the daylight.
