"What are you doing here at such a late hour?" Severus asked in his usual sarcastic tone. He was entering his 5th year of Hogwarts as were the marauders.

                          
"I thought I felt someone lurking in the shadows" Maria replied, mimicking Severus' tone of voice. They got along quite well, but then again Maria got on admirably with anyone she met.

                          
Severus frowned at her lack of an answer.

                          
"You haven't answered my question " 

                          
Maria merrily chuckled at her old friend's unwavering persistence. She slowly turned to meet his gaze before replying with such seriousness that it would have sent shivers of any sane person's spine.

                          
"Truthfully... 

                          
 I haven't slept in over 30 years."
