With skin sticky and rough with salt from the hours spent in the ocean, two sets of hands worked at the warm ground, pulling at the dirt and weeds with gusto. The evening air was punctuated with peals of laughter. The sun set with a golden halo, as it so often did on summer nights in North Carolina. Beneath the willow tree, two figures, slight in stature, sat side by side and joined their pinkies. Fireflies danced around them. Their eyes twinkled as they set the time capsule, their precious treasure, into the earth. In four years, they would uncover it before college started. They vowed to each other they would be friends forever.
But four years would change everything.
