After her sister had fallen asleep to the soothing sounds of the guitar and her voice, Ruby quietly padded out of Chloë's bedroom to her own. She had some important work to do.
After rummaging among stacks of papers in her drawer, she finally found what she was looking for: her sleek black laptop. She booted it up and started an encrypted video call with the insanely intelligent fifteen-or-so-year-old boy she had been talking to for the past five months.
He never told her his name, and neither did she, for obvious reasons. All she had ever gotten to know about him was that he lived in Los Angeles, made unbelievably realistic illusions, (which she had stumbled upon while scrolling through Instagram) and that he hated Ash with the same passion for an unknown reason. He had hair which was an inky shade of black, and silver eyes which sparkled even through her screen.
He reminded her of Tiberius Blackthorn.
She had asked him four months ago to design a key for a specific lock that he was very familiar with, and to make it in such a way that it looked like a painting. That key meant everything to her.
It held someone's secrets. Secrets which could make a very big difference.
