The star of the show, Genie, appears when Aladdin rubs the magic lamp and becomes friends with him. where as in the original version. In the original version their are two Genies. One which was given to him by an evil man who wanted to steal the lamp, in other words Jafar, and the Genie in the lamp.

Jasmine's mother was originally from the kingdom of Shehrabad, which in the world of Aladdin is located in South East Asia, and her wedding to the sultan of Agrabah which was an arranged marriage that united two countries to form an alliance, which means that Jasmine's dual heritage is half Arab and half South East Asian.

In the new movie, Jafar specifically mentions Sherhabad, Jasmine's mothers homeland, as a target. When the sultan tells Jafar that Sherabad is Agrabah's oldest ally and that they shouldn't be dragged into war with them. It sounded like something happened to break the bond between two countries. Of course Jasmine's mother was either a princess or some sort of royalty to get married to a sultan and her death should have sent shock waves so this is most likely the incident.

In the movie Jafar mentions that he went to Sherabad and he was imprisoned there. He also talks about all of the bodies he buried. I say that its likely that Jafar wanted to rise to power and to control the king like in Disney's animated version so he killed Jasmine's mother.
