Make a little sketch of the main picture and practice on that! You can see what looks best, try new techniques, or just experiment!

Or, before you start working on what you're nervous about, practice on a blank paper! In this example, I wanted to be sure I chose the best pose for the bird and the best layout of the overall piece.
