"Judging by the faces that people are making, it's nice of you to join us, too."
Perhaps it's not the impression she should be making, but something about the way he says her name so evenly and yet with such condescension makes her skin crawl.
"I've been busy," he answers. "It's not a given that I will always be around. I've heard that you've been causing a bit of trouble."
"Not trouble," she shrugs. "I'm simply enjoying my last summer of freedom."
He blinks a couple of times before an amused smile spreads across his face. "Okay, I'll bite. Whatever do you mean by that?"
"Daddy dearest isn't going to stay hidden forever," she states simply. "I mean, if I was a betting person, which I totally am, I'd put good money on him being out and about strolling down Diagon Alley by next August. Even I'm not stupid enough to put myself in the firing line and then not take precautions. It only goes downhill from here."
Nico snorts lightly. "Ever the optimist, Lia."
"Better to be a pessimist and be right than an optimist and be disappointed," she retorts.
McGonagall's face eases into a fond smile. "That's Finn Macullin talking."
"I do believe that's a direct quote," Aurelia nods.
"I'm assuming that I interrupted you mid-explanation about why you should be able to join the Order," Dumbledore comments, guiding them back on topic.
"Actually, I'd just finished," she corrects. "I've said my piece and now it's out of my hands. I just have a single request." Dumbledore gestures for her to continue. "Don't leave Harry and me to our own devices. That's not going to end well. Instead, it'll end in resentment and frustration and a whole lot of anger and that's not going to help anybody. We're young and kind of stupid and we've never been in this position before. We need adult guidance, we need to be reassured that we're doing okay."
The group is in silence as her words settle in before Sirius stands from his seat. "Let me show you to where you're staying tonight. We'll have plenty of time to talk tomorrow and then when you come back eventually."
He leads her back into the dark hallway and up the stairs. She stops him when they're far enough away from the kitchen and the portrait and surveys him for a moment. "How are you doing, Sirius? Back in your childhood home and all... it can't be easy. I know you don't exactly have good memories here," she inquires. Sirius lets out a short laugh.
"You know, you're one of the only people who's asked me that," he points out. "You're incredibly perceptive."
"Add it to the list of my many talents," she shrugs. "But genuinely. How are you feeling about it all?"
