~ I had a nightmare

WARNING: sad story. Contains mention of death!

You were walking around the paddock in Imola. It had been a very sad week so far. Rubens Barrichello had crashed on Friday. It had scared you and Ayrton a lot. He is a good friend of the two of you. However yesterday was even worse. Roland Ratzenberger had hit a concrete wall and lost his live. It was a really difficult time. You were afraid. Of course you were, but Ayrton wanted to race. He would race for them. There were some talks of him not racing. We weren't sure he was emotionally capable. But he wouldn't let anyone stop him. Racing is his live. He would win this race for them.

Ayrton walked towards you and pulled you close to his chest. You felt his rapid heart beat. You knew he was nervous.

"Promise me you will be careful."

"I won't do anything stupid. I promise. Don't worry to much okay?" You sighed and nodded your head. "I need to go. I'll speak to you after the race." He quickly gave you a kiss on your forehead before he ran towards the Williams garage.

"Be careful!"

You and an Williams intern were seated before the screens. The two of you always watched the race together.

"Everything will be fine Y/N. Don't worry too much and try to enjoy the race."

"I know I shouldn't be so stressed. I just have this terrible feeling that something is going to happen."

"Nothing is going to happen. Everything is going to be alright."

"You are probably right."

The cars were ready to start. Everybody rushed to their places. Almost. And lights out. The first lap was always scary. They were so close to each other. Please don't hit each other. He entered the straight. He made it. He was completely fine. Nothing would happen now right?

No. Please no. He lost control. He crashed in to the wall. His car was completely gone. Please be alright. Please. He moved! You were sure you saw his head move. He was alive. Why wasn't he moving anymore? You heard the helicopter fly over. They were going to help him. They lifted him out of his car. He seemed unconscious.

You ran trough the paddock. Why wasn't anyone telling you how he was. Everybody was quiet. The tears were streaming down your face. He promised he was going to be safe.

Alain Prost was walking towards you. You sprinted in his direction.

"Alain. Help me. What is going on. Why is everybody so quiet?" Your tears were streaming down your face and you felt a lump grow in the back of your throat.

"H-he is gone."

•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

"Hey. Y/N what's wrong?" You looked at Ayrton.

"Please don't race today."

"Y/N." He sighed. "We talked about this. I know you're scared but I'm going to race. You said you were okay with my decision yesterday."

"I know it's just..."

"What is it?"

"I had a nightmare."

"Tell me."

"You died okay? You crashed during the race. It was the most horrible thing I've ever seen. I-I can't. I just can't."

"Hey look at me. You haven't seen anything. It was a nightmare. Nothing happened and nothing will happen. I promise."

You sighed and let your head fall against his chest. You were acting stupid. He was going trough an extremely though time after the events of the past two days and you were making him feel even worse. You were supposed to support him not drag him down. You felt tears coming up but you wiped them away. You needed to be strong now. Ayrton was drawing little circles on your back. He was comforting you while he was the one standing so close to this al.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You were standing in the Williams garage. Ayrton was doing some last checks with his engineer. The intern you always watched the race with walked towards you.
"Hey. How are you doing Y/N?"
"I'm nervous."
"That's very understandable. Maybe you should give Rubens a call. See how he's doing."
"Yeah you are right. Thank you."
You walked away and called Ruben. He'll known exactly what to say. You stayed on the phone for a minute or ten. He had to rest but he said that he would watch the race on television. You felt a little better after you had talked to him.
You walked towards the Williams garage again. You saw that Ayrton was standing outside. You walked to him and wrapped your arms around him.
"I was looking for you. Where did you go?"
"I called Ruben."
"How is he doing?" He placed his hand on your lower back and led you inside de garage
"Well obviously not amazing but he's coping."
"Good"
He zipped up his suit and gave you a quick kiss on the cheek. "I need to get in the car. I'll take you out for dinner after the race."
You watched him climb into his car. Your stomach was aching. Everything got so close. You had that terrible feeling again. That feeling that something bad was going to happen to him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Lights out. You hated the first lap. So many things could go wrong on the first lap. Lap two. Everything was still good. Nothing would happen now right? That's also what you thought in your dream.

Lap seven. He crashed. Debris was flying everywhere. The car stopped. Marshals were running towards him. A helicopter flew over. They lifted his body out his car and placed him on the ground. The helicopter arrived. The marshals were standing all around him. You couldn't see him. You couldn't see what they were doing.

But you knew. You knew he was gone.
