This trope shows up when the main character and her/his love interest just so happens to be in the same class as them and the teacher 'considently' pairs them up with each other. Either the characters hate each other or one has feelings for the other.
I just think it's funny how the teacher always pairs the 'smart kid' with the 'bad boy'. Like what happened to pick partners. Cause I refuse to have a teacher pick my partner and they don't do their work. That would piss me off.
If you want to spice up the partner selection trope, imagine this...
Karen has a crush on Billy. Billy is oblivious, because he is dating Patty. Patty is the 'mean girl' and most popular girl in school or whatever. The teacher assigns partners, but the teacher assigns Karen and Patty to be partners. Now that would be interesting 👀
