I remember when it all started, the day the world went to shit. They say it was an outbreak of some sort of virus. No one knows how it began or how it spread so fast. But I think God was just fed up with the human race destroying this once beautiful Earth that he created so he wanted to destroy us. And I don't blame him. But damn, a little warning would have been nice.

I'm (y/n) by the way. I'm seventeen, born and raised in New Jersey, until I turned thirteen and my family moved here to Atlanta, Georgia, where my mother was originally from. Before I moved I was the girl who was friends with everyone. I wouldn't say I was popular because I hate that term. I wasn't one of those 'cool kids' who went out to parties every weekend. I've never had a boyfriend, which I just assumed was because I was never pretty enough. And when people would ever say I was 'popular' I would just scrunch up my nose and shake my head because I really wasn't. I was just a nice person to everyone, so I had a lot of friends.

People weren't very welcoming at my new school. I hated it. I had no friends. I struggled with depression a lot. Sprinkle on some anxiety and your average "emo teenage loner" attitude and I could understand why nobody wanted to be friends with me. So I just accepted it- being alone. Grade 11 was different. I found a group of friends, a very small group, but enough for me to not be alone. We were the outcasts. People made fun of us. But that was ok because my friends taught me not to care what others thought about me. And it felt great. I was finally happy.

And then it happened.

**FLASHBACK**

It was a perfectly normal day. I get up, go to school, and wait till that stupid bell rings at 3:00 to free us all of our agony. Both my mom and dad were working late so I had walk home. Which wasn't a problem for me, I liked the walk it was relaxing and almost peaceful. The path I take home is usually secluded so I never have to see anyone. So put on my headphones and put on some music. When I get to my street I look up and see everyone frantically running around. Going to each other's doors, filling cars up with their belongings, getting in them and leaving, others were simply running away. Away? From what? I was so confused. And then I saw the scared and worried looks on everyone's faces. My heart started racing in panic. What the hell is going on?

I pull off my headphones and begin running towards my house as I dig in my bag to find my key as I run directly into my neighbor Eithan. He goes to my school; he's a senior, a grade above me. We weren't exactly friends, although I've had a crush on him since 9th grade, but we did talk sometimes and he was always very nice to me, despite the fact that he was one of the popular kids. But he broke the stereotype. He wasn't like the rest of the kids here. He was always so friendly to everyone.

He holds both of my shoulders looking at me with a concerned look on his face.

"Are you ok?" he kind of yells.

"I'm fine, will you please tell me what is happening!" I yelled back.

"We're evacuating. Everyone's saying there was an outbreak. A virus they didn't want us to know about." They? As soon as he finished his sentence we heard an explosion and the ground shook. Followed by another, this one closer by.

I look at him, "A virus? What virus?"

And that's when I heard it. The blood curdling screams. I will never forget those screams until the day I die. The color drains from my face and Eithan takes my hand and pulls me towards his house. "Come on we're gonna need some help" He says as we make our way to his front door. He opens the door and once we're inside he slams it shut and locks it. "Check all of the doors and windows and lock them" he tells me. I nod and do what I am told and he does the same.

"They all locked?" he comes around the corner. I nod my head and he motions for me to come with him. He opens the door to his basement and we rush down the stairs. He takes a key out of his pocket and goes to another door and unlocks it. I must look terrified because he gives me a reassuring look and pushes the door open. Inside is a big room full of all kinds of weapons and supplies. He takes out two duffel bags and two back packs when he looks at me and realized the worried confusion on my face.
