 - They grew up poor and bitter, finally concluding that people who play by the rules get screwed and the only way to succeed is to break them. 

 - They are very logical - too logical. Their evil plan seems perfectly sensible to them. 

 - Humanity is a threat.

 - They love one person in particular more than they care who else lives or dies. 

 - They find the suffering of others entertaining. 

 - It started out as instinct in a desperate situation but evolved into something far more sinister.
