Chapter Twelve
The cold breeze caused me to hug my knees closer to my chest. I was sitting on the roof above my balcony, an extra large sweatshirt over my dress. The sun was rising.
Tomorrow will be my first day of school. Today is the day Dad will be leaving to Hawaii with his wife. My stepmother. Jeydon and I had promised to take responsibility over Kate. Jeydon claimed we were now older, therefore 'wiser' so we would be more responsible than last time. He will drive Kate to daycare everyday until they come back in seven days. Summer had gone by so quickly. It's as if I slept through it all and woken up today, going back into reality.
I pulled the hood of my sweatshirt over my head once I couldn't feel my ears anymore. I haven't spoken to my friends in so long. They probably hate me. I promised I'd call them everyday, claiming I'd be bored as hell in New York. I guess I've changed my mind. I feel a vibration in my pocket and pull out my phone. One unread text from Jeydon. I smile and read his text.
"Get off the roof and meet me out front to say bye"
I immediatly scan my surroundings. Jeydon is nowhere in sight. How did he know I was on the roof? I push myself off the roof and scurry into my room. In my room, I pull on a pair of gray sweatpants before meeting Jeydon out by the front door.
"I still can't believe how sweet you are." I tell him as I follow him to the car, where he puts the suitcases in the trunk. "To book a flight for their honeymoon and all."
"What can I say?" He says, closing the trunk. "I'm an angel," he adds with a wink.
We all hug our parents before they drive off. We sit on the porch and watch the car u.ntil it's out of sight.
"Now what?" I ask, staring at the road as if the car will come back.
"How about we go to the park?" He suggests. "Kate loves the park."
Kate nods eagerly. "I wanna go to the park!"
"Sure," I smile, standing up.
"You are going to change, right?" He asks, pointing at my sweatshirt and torn sweatpants.
"What, you gotta problem with that?" I ask.
He holds his hands up in defense. "Nope, leggo!"
I giggle, "You're so lame!"
"Lamer than you?" He asks.

"Higher, higher!" Kate screams, giggling. Jeydon pushes her harder on the swing.
"Jeydon, if you push her any higher, she's going to fall off the swing."
He pushes her slower. I walk over to the monkey bars, feeling Jeydon close behind. "You know, "I've never been able to go on these."
"Really?" He asks, grabbing onto the bars like a monkey.
"Show off." I mutter. "I could only hang on for two seconds before falling."
"Try," He says, jumping off the bars.
I grab onto a bar with a sigh. I feel his arms snake around my waist, supporting me. "That's cheating!" I cry.
"Shhhh," he whispers. "I won't tell if you don't."
Why does he have to be so cute? I complete the monkey bars, with the help of my stepbrother.
"You did it!" He cries. He holds up his hand for a high-five. I smirk before slapping his hand with mine.
I hear a familiar song. And then I hear Kate. "The ice cream truck!!" She cries, running toward the white truck. Jeydon and I run after her.
"I want the SpongeBob ice cream." She tells the man. He chuckles before handing her the packet with a picture of Spongebob.
"Actually, make that two more." Jeydon says, handing the man money. He turns to me and holds out the packet. "Last day of summer celebration?" He asks with this super cute childish grin.
I take the packet and unwrap it. "Cheers!" I say, tapping my SpongeBob head against his.
We sit on the porch, finishing our ice cream while we watch Kate on the swings. All of a sudden, the popsicle stick slips out of my hands and falls onto the ground. "Noo!" I shriek.
Jeydon grabs it and pops it into his mouth, "Five second rule." He grins, mouth full.
"You're disgusting!" I say, playfully shoving him.
We both laugh. Jeydon turns to me and our eyes lock. He leans toward me and puts a hand on my face.
Is he..? No, no. Omigosh, he is. He is. What do I do?! I have no idea.
He drags the sleeve of his shirt across my mouth. "You've got SpongeBob guts all over your face." His eyes twinkle.
Why is it that I'm upset that he didn't kiss me?
