London - 16th December 1974
Brian's POV
"It was in the post.." I told him and he walked over and took the invitation from me. It was really happening. Deacy was getting married. The invitation was in the pile of mail that awaited us when we arrived home from the European tour. He told us in late October Veronica was pregnant and they had quickly become engaged. Now there was a wedding date and we were invited! It touched me deeply that Veronica had addressed the invitation to us together. She didn't send us separate ones.
"Wow! A catholic wedding!" Roger commented as he tacked the invitation to our refrigerator. I knew Veronica was a Catholic so I wasn't surprised. They would get married on the 18th of January and just have time for a short honeymoon before we leave for the States on the 31st. We are finally going back to America.
"We need to get them a gift.." I told him and knew I should add it to my list of things to do. Boy did we have a lot to do! I took the rest of the mail and sat down on the couch to sort through it as Roger took our dry cleaning up the stairs.
"So would that be a wedding gift or a baby gift?" Roger asked me as he came back downstairs.
"Don't get ahead of the game..." I told him. "A wedding gift for now. I don't think the baby is due until summer.." I told him. He nodded understanding to me and went back upstairs to fix his hair. I continued going through the mail and made little piles for different things.
"Anything else interesting in the post?" Roger shouted to me from the bathroom. I found a small notecard in the pile and saw it was from Trevor and Wilkie; our friends and hoteliers from Brighton. I tore it open and read the short note. They acknowledged receiving our postcards from Glasgow and Gotenburg and wrote a charming thank you for sharing our travels with them. I smiled as I finished and Roger came walking downstairs.
"A note from Trev and Wilks.." I told him and Roger took the note to read it. He stood as he looked it over. I noticed Roger slip his hand into his shirt and rub his shoulder. He had done this a few times and I wondered if it was soreness in his shoulder or some type of self soothing. He looked cute doing it. I smiled widely as he handed it back.
"I'm glad they got our postcards..." Roger commented and I tucked the card into a stack of things to keep. "It would be nice to see them again when we get a chance...they have great stories. Maybe if they get up to London and if we are home.." he pondered as he put his shoes on and sat down on the couch next to me. He picked up a pile of mail and saw it was bills and got a foul look on his face and set it aside. He leaned over to kiss me and I giggled as he nibbled at my bottom lip.
"You headed out?" I asked him and he nodded as he stood up to leave.
"Yeah.....see you in a few hours.." he said to me as he pulled on his coat and a velvet cap.
I'll meet you there.." I told him as I stood up and followed him to the door. Roger turned and pecked my lips as he grabbed his keys and wallet. Once he left the flat, I grabbed my bag and slipped my coat and shoes on. I went out the door and saw the car driving the other way. I quickly walked the other direction towards the park. I arrived at the neighborhood hardware store and was delighted to see they still had a few small Christmas trees left. I found one I knew I could carry and went straight home with it. I went back out again and bought a tree stand and some basic decorations from a local shop. I hurried home and decorated our little tree while keeping an eye on the clock. It was our first real Christmas together in our own place and I wanted to surprise him with a tree. It wasn't much but it was something. I finished up and jumped into a quick shower and then got ready for the Trident Christmas party we were going to after his photoshoot. I took my pinstripe black suit from the clothes bag and put it on over my white button down shirt. Roger really liked this suit so I wore it for him.
