"(Y/N), do not do this!"

The female Dwarf shook her head and sighed, the night breeze that surrounded the mountain urging her to continue on her path without a moment's rest. In spite of the very forces of nature desiring her to do no such thing, she turned back to see Kili's betrayed face staring at her desperately. His arms were outstretched as though he expected her to return to him simply because of the broken look in his eyes. (Y/N) was forced to turn away, as looking at him for another moment would surely have killed her.

"You know me, Kili...you know that this is far from my first time doing this," (Y/N) said quietly. She clutched the small pouch containing more than enough gold to support an entire village for a century's time closer to her chest, not willing to let it go. And yet, at the same time, she was not willing to take it. It was the look of sheer heartbreak on the prince's face that had brought her to this horribly indecisive state.

Kili surged forward, quickly blocking (Y/N)'s path with his own body. He continued to stare at her wildly, as though he was in disbelief that she was doing exactly what she promised she would do should she ever be allowed into the great halls of Erebor ever again.

"You knew of my reputation when you invited me to join this quest, Kili. I do not see why it surprises you that I am living up to it," (Y/N) continued. She hurriedly pushed past him and began to make her escape at a brisk pace. Before she could flee, however, Kili wrapped his hand around her arm. He would not let her go so easily.

"So everything that you said to me...everything...it was all a lie?" Kili asked, a wounded sound overpowering his usually playful tone of voice.

"Of course not!" (Y/N) barked. "I meant what I said! Surely even you can see that my love for you is real! This is only the consequence of my family's desperate need for gold!"

Kili released her, and she instantly began to walk away. She stopped dead in her tracks upon hearing the baffling sound of laughter. She turned around and saw a maniacal grin on Kili's face as he threw his hands up in defeat. "Is that what this is about?" he asked, the ridiculous smile on his face growing in size. "If your family needs gold, why not just bring them here? Surely you didn't expect us to exclude you from the reward of this quest?"

(Y/N) shook her head. "My father is much too proud to accept any sort of help from someone outside of the family- much less the Dwarven King himself."

Kili's smile faded all too quickly. With a disheartened look in his eyes, he slowly encroached upon her position. The two stood idly, allowing the steady snowfall to coat their hair and faces as they watched each other in silence.

"You truly must leave me then?" Kili asked.

(Y/N) looked down, unable to face him. "My only wish is that I would stay."

Kili grasped either of her shoulders, effectively forcing her to face him. The loving gleam that resided in his eye when he looked at her had returned as he whispered, "Nothing is stopping you."

And yet, everything was.

Unable to bear looking at him any longer, (Y/N) fled into the night.

. . .

"Come on, (Y/N)!" Kili called, laughing as he continued to race through the trees. The two children had engaged in a game of hide-and-seek with Fili, who as of yet was hiding so well that they had been unable to find him for quite some time. (Y/N) soon caught up to Kili, and the two smiled at each other as they pressed on in hopes of finding the other Durin brother.

Eventually they reached a clearing surrounded by the familiar trees that they had been playing in since their first meeting several months previously. Kili stopped momentarily to hold his hand above his eyes, blocking out the sun in hopes of spotting some sign of Fili. He hardly took note of (Y/N)'s approaching form until she was mere meters away from him.
