They say a soldier's born, bred
I never thought I'd end up dead
A bandaged limb I knew for sure
I always thought I'd leave the war
But I landed in the trenches
Wretched mix of gore and stenches
The gas hissed and I lost my sight
The trenches faded black as night
I never heard the German's gun
A shell, my skull and I was done
Fast asleep now, bones I remain
A silent specter, free from pain
Forget me not, my tale still tell
Always remember - war brings hell
Author's Note: This was heavily inspired by songs from the latest Sabaton album, The Great War. This poem is about a soldier from World War I who died during trench warfare. I actually wrote it during a break at work.
