The sect of the Assassins arose out of the need to track down and kill the enemies of Hattoism – leaders of rival cults, notorious heretics, sometimes princes and politicans who were critical of the Hattoists or were attempting to stifle their growing power. Initially the Brotherhood hired mercenaries to do this, but finding them too expensive and mercurial, they began to offer absolution to criminals in return for a lifetime of service. The vilest murderer could have his slate wiped clean. The training that followed was brutal. The initiate was broken down, body and mind, then rebuilt in the image of the avenging angel, the terrible Spear of Hatto.
