iii. Plot

PLOT. You know, only the most important part of your story. It wouldn't be a story without a plot, would it? Here's the dictionary's definition of a plot:

(n) Also called storyline. The plan, scheme, or main story of a literary or dramatic work, as a play, novel, or short story.

So you see, the plot is the essence of your story, so it's gotta be good, right? Well, here are my biggest pieces of advice:

-Know your plot

Don't even post your book unless you have a general idea of it's beginning, plot twists, and ending. That was definitely my biggest mistake as a newbie author, because I literally had no point for the entire story except that it was a story.

-Don't be afraid of plot twists

Who doesn't love a good plot twist? Yeah, for a while the reader may not be too happy about it, but when all is said and done, they will love you for it. Besides, it makes your story interesting and more complex, which is more intriguing for readers and more enjoyable to write.

-Don't rush the plot

Never, and I mean NEVER, rush the plot. This is definitely something I personally have difficulty with. I have it all imagined out in my head (time flies when you daydream, am I right?), but writing it is a whole different story. You don't want your readers (or characters) being rushed to the end of a story. A lot of times, this where you'll see:

Roses are red
Violets are blue
Can I just say
tHaT eScAlAtEd QuIcKlY

No? Never mind, that's only in romance stories. Then again, don't most stories (especially on here) have romance...? ;)

-Keep the plot holes filled

Plot holes are those sneaky little inconsistencies that the readers always catch FOR you. Wikipedia defines it as,

In fiction, a plot hole, plothole or plot error is a gap or inconsistency in a storyline that goes against the flow of logic established by the story's plot.

We all have them, whether major or minor. Before you publish your chapter, make sure it doesn't contradict anything that happened/was said prior.
