Ever since that day, I guess we've become friends. We always met up between class to talk about our homework assignments and luckily enough, our lockers were only a couple numbers apart. With this small connection we had, I learned a lot about this magical kid. His father died before he was born and he always keeps his staff in his locker in case something were to happen. He doesn't have many friends either, unless you were to count those three kids from science. But between you and me, I think they only started talking to him after they learned he was a wizard, but that didn't stop him from always wanting to talk to them after school.
Now it's the beginning of June, reaching the end of our sophomore year. As the final bell rang signalling the weekend I walked out of my science class and headed to my locker. I didn't want to wait for Ian since he was talking to this purple chick. Gosh, I should really learn their names. Anywayyy, I opened my locker to drop off my things. We don't have any homework since the end of the year was so close so I just yeeted my bag into my locker. As I slammed it shut I saw Ian open his locker. I saw his staff tumble out and land on the tiled floor. I laughed and decided to pick it up for him since his hands were full of textbooks.
"Haha, thanks Gail," Ian said as he saw me bend down. And that's when I made contact with the stick. I never touched it before so when I saw it shake and glow a light teal I thought it was normal. I shrugged and turned to Ian with the staff in my hands only to find him staring at me with huge eyes. His eyes began darting to the staff and to my face so fast I thought he was having a seizure.
"What's wrong," I asked as I handed him the staff. His hands shook as he took it from my hands. That's when I saw his eyes light up. "You need to come with me," he cried with the utmost certainty. I didn't have time to think when he grabbed my hand and dragged me across the hallway to the stairs leading outside. He pulled me down the stairs and up to Barley's minivan that was waiting for him. We sat in the backseat but before I could ask what was happening Ian cried, "Barley we need to get home now. Something amazing just happened."
"You got it little bro." Barley gave him wink and flipped out some shades and placed them over his eyes with a swift movement. What is happeninggggg. I slouched and wavered my gaze to Ian. He reminded me of a puppy. His eyes were big and full of excitement and he couldn't stop bouncing his leg. It was kind of cute. I smiled and looked around the van. It was decorated with stuff that reminded me of quests of yore and there were some take out boxes from the Manticore's Tavern. I kicked one of the boxes away from my feet with my crocs. Yes I'm wearing crocs. It's warm so I'm wearing a simple t-shirt and shorts and these crocs just compliment the whole outfit so fight me.
After the short and bumpy ride I saw Barley hop out of the van and come around back to let Ian and me out of the trunk. I stumbled out and followed Ian and Barley as they ran into their mushroom house. Their mom wasn't home so the only one to greet us when Barley kicked open the door was their pet dragon. I was forced up a staircase and into a room with gray sheets. I guess I'm in Ian's room again and hopefully I won't get blood on his sheets like last time. I shivered with the ptse, post traumatic embarrassment.
"Barley, grab the spell book," cried Ian. Barley ran out of the room and began charging down the staircase. Ian, on the other hand, was staring at me with such a fanboyish smile. He then handed me the wand.
"Okay okay," he began. "You're probably really confused but I think we know why the wand glowed." Barley entered the room again and cheered, "You have the gift! My brother's girlfriend has the gift!" Ian froze and exclaimed, "Gail i-is not my girlfriend!"
"Whatever you say little brother. Anyway," Barley turned to me. "We need you to test a few beginner spells to really see if you are a wizard like Ian here." He shoved a book in front of my face.
Everything was coming at me at once. First they say I'm a wizard, Barley thinks I'm Ian's significant other, and now they want me to perform magic?! I pushed the book down from my face and sighed. I fell back onto Ian's bed and slumped over with the wand in my lap. "Ow!"
"Splinter," Ian and Barley asked in unison. "Yeah," I replied confused while setting the wand beside me and making way to pull the piece out of my finger.
"W-wait!" Ian cried while waving his arms in front of me. His face read distressed so I stopped. "We can use this," he continued. He began walking around his room and opening drawers. He gasped as he opened a drawer in his desk. He then pulled out a pair of silver tweezers and walked back over to me. I gulped as he grabbed my hand gently.
"Hey, uh, Gail."
"Yuh," I replied, shaking.
"I can only do this if you show me your finger." He looked up at me with a sheepish smile and something just seemed comforting, I smiled back and held out the finger with the splinter.
I'll spare you the "gory" details of what happened next. If you couldn't tell, I can be a bit of a wimp when it comes to this. I puked my guts out when my class dissected frogs. But, in no time at all, Ian held out the little piece of wood that dug its way into my skin.
Without any warning he cried, "Dagnora Gantuan!" My eyes opened wide with amazement as the splinter grew into a staff similar, but curveir, to Ian's. I guess I'm going to become a wizard.I just want to say thank you to all the support!! Also I apologize for the short chapters and terrible grammar. I've been writing this late at night since that's the only time my schedule permits it. Again, thank you for helping my idea come to life!!
