"You bet your tail it is," claimed Barley. He placed his hands on his hips and justed his head up and turned it 45 degrees. I think he was having a moment but Corey turned to me and whispered, "Why is he looking at the ceiling light like that?"
I shrugged and tapped Barley on his shoulder. Corey was already heading out of the kitchen but not the way we came. As we passed through the countertops and stoves we eventually made it to a dimly lit room with a desk and a chair behind it.
"Welcome to the Manticore's Office," she exclaimed. Just then the room got brighter as Corey lit up the torches placed on the walls.
"Wow," breathed Ian. Wow was right. The whole room was covered with maps, weapons, and treasured from her many adventures. Corey was rustling through the desk in front of us. She was bent down so only her scorpion tail was up in the air. Soon it began to wave back and forth.
"I think I- Ow!" Corey bumped her head on the desk as she lifted the map up high for the world to see. Barley showed no hesitation as he ran across and snatched the worn paper from her paws. His eyes widened.
"This is going to be epic," he claimed. He began pacing back and forth. "This map doesn't show any landmarks in New Mushroomton." He turned to Corey. "Where even is this place?"
"You are looking at the map for the legendary Phantom Stone!" Barley's jaw dropped to the floor. "You will find it in the secret tunnel located under the Gargoyle cemetery in Dragonville."
"B-but that's all the way across the ocean," stuttered Ian. Barley grabbed his younger brother my the waist and picked his up in a big hug.
"Right you are, my young apprentice! We shall travel across the ocean! This quest is going to be awesome!"
All I could do was stare in awe. Who knew that almost getting a concussion would lead me to traveling to Dragonville. I smiled. "Thank you Ms Manticore," I said.
"It's no problem my elf trio! Just be careful for the dark wizards." She winked. "They haven't been seen in ages but legend says they are still looking for the Phantom Stone. Some say that they will stop anyone in their path, even if it means," She tilted her head and pretended to slice it off with her finger.
Ian shivered. Barley was elated and I was, well, I don't even know but this should be fun right?
It took a while to get Barley out of the Tavern. He was so fascinated by all of the new changes that we had to grab him by his legs and arms and carry his body out. Ian decided to take the first driving shift so that left me and Barley in the back to look at spells.
"So you already know the shrinking and growing spell, is there anything specific you would like to learn?" Barley was flipping through all of the pages of his book while we sat in the seats.
"Eventually, I would like to learn a summoning spell, you know, in case I ever lose my staff," I replied. I turned to see Barley looking at me very intently. He was scanning me up and down, very concentrated.
I returned his expressions with a confused look so he stopped and smiled. "I can see why Ian likes you," he chuckled. My heart stopped and I felt like I was set into a pool of lava.
"W-wh-what do you mean?!" I squeaked. I looked up to the driver's seat wide eyed. Did he hear us???
Nope. Ian was too busy singing along to Disco Girl to hear us. Wow, no wonder I don't ever see him in the music and art hallway. I looked back at Barley, feeling slightly better. He continued, "He's going on about how you're so awesome and smart and the way your eyes sparkle when the sun hits them just right." Barley's hands were making swoops down, forming a rainbow as he was speaking. I however, was shaking, trying to process everything.
"Just hey, don't tell him I told you all of this," Barley spoke as he grabbed my hand, his expressions suddenly serious. "I want him to gather enough courage to finally say something but please, just don't hurt him." I nodded my head and turned to look at the spell book. Can this trip get anymore interesting?!
