"Ok, we are going to start with some beginner spells," Barley began very giddy. "It's time to bring back the age of magic!!" He pumped his fist into the air and stared at it with very awkward silence. Ian sighed. I guess he was used to this. I was humored though, you could really see their contrasting personalities. Ian is a reserved kid with a bit of courage down deep while Barley is just a big ole teddy bear with confidence for a whole room. Yet, they both have huge hearts and I can tell that they really do care about each other. As an only child, I found that love with my parents. Well, mostly my mom now since my dad is exploring the world.
I shook the thought of him from my mind and asked, "Soooooo, which spell should I try first? I wanna learn how to walk on air!" Barley laughed.
"Ah, you still have a long way to go my young apprentice." He placed his hand on my shoulder. Out of the corner of my eye, I swore I saw Ian flinch. I shrugged it off and looked at the card that Barley held in his other hand.
"Aloft elevar," I mumbled. Sounds weird but oh well. I looked at Ian with a smug look.
"Gail? W-what-"
"Aloft Elevar!!" I chanted whilst staring at Ian who was backing away into a corner. And right before my eyes I saw my staff glow teal and before I knew it, Ian was being lifted off the ground.
"Uh, what are you doing?" He cried as he tried to swim through the air. I laughed and swung the staff around the room, watching Ian soar like a bird. Then a dark thought filled my mind.
"Barley?" I turned towards him. "How do I stop the spell?" He was still staring at Ian, laughing.
He turned towards me and said, "Just divert your focus to something else but you might want to lower him down a bit." He pointed to a scared Ian who was pushed up against the ceiling. Oops. I shifted the staff to point towards Ian's bed. As he was floating over it I drifted my focus. I closed my eyes and started humming. Music always transferred me to another world.
I heard a thump and opened my eyes to an exasperated Ian. He breathed, "How did you learn that so quickly?" I replied, "Well, now that I know it's possible and not just some legend, I feel like I can accomplish anything." He smiled softly and adjusted himself on the bed. He looked at Barley. "Do you want to try any more spells," Ian asked.
Barley looked at us with a very smug look on his face. "I have a better idea," he started. "School's almost over for you guys right? I think we should go on another quest!" His face brightened up as he paced around the room. "We can take Gwenevier the Second to another historical place and try out more spell, find new magical items, creatures, and try out harder and cooler spells!" He looked at both of us with his arms wide open. I looked at Ian to see him contemplating the whole situation.
I looked at Barley. "That sounds like a fun idea. I don't have any plans so I guess I'm in," I stated. These two were my only friends and I was not about to waste another summer looking at mermaid facegram pics.
"You know what," Ian started, pushing himself off the bed and walking over to Barley. "Count me in, what's the worst that could happen?"
