Part Twenty Three

Ash leaps off Charizard's back onto what's left of the building's concrete roof.

Zekrom cries loud enough to shake the building and emits sparks of electricity into the atmosphere. Charizard grunts coolly in response. Ash and Geneva stare each other down from across the gaping hole in the roof.

Ash claims the first move, "Charizard, fire spin!"

"Zekrom, thunderbolt!" Geneva counters.

Charizard soars over the hole and releases a massive fiery stream that hits Zekrom directly, but doesn't appear to affect it much. Zekrom's thunderbolts move towards Charizard. Ash sees that Charizard has a huge type disadvantage against Zekrom's impressive electric moves.

"CHARIZARD, QUICKLY, MEGA EVOLVE." Ash shouts at his Pokemon while holding onto his key stone bracelet. Charizard roars as his body glows and morphs into Mega Charizard X just in time for the thunderbolt to strike. Fortunately, in his new form, Charizard is not weak against electricity.

"Get in there with a dragon pulse!" Ash commands as Charizard soars towards Zekrom once again.

"Match it with your own dragon pulse!" Geneva cries with equal vigor.

The two dragons blow massive purple beams of draconic power at each other; neither letting up.

"Into the sky, Charizard!"

"Follow it!"

Charizard soars away from Zekrom as it attempts to move closer to him. Zekrom is much larger and definitely stronger than Charizard and Ash fears the outcome of this battle.

"Spin back towards it!" Ash yells. "Use dragon claw!"

Charizard gets in close to the massive Pokemon and swipes against its chest and face, flying away quickly.

"Fusion bolt!" Geneva shouts. Zekrom builds up electricity and sends a strong bolt straight for Charizard. At such a close range, Charizard is unable to dodge it fully. He falters but recovers.

"Dragon pulse!" Ash shouts again. This time, Charizard is able to land a direct hit.

"Finish it!" Geneva looks confident and shouts. "OUTRAGE!"

Zekrom heats up with draconic power and flies towards Charizard. Charizard flies out of the way, dodging the attack. However, Zekrom is too quick. On its next attempt, Zekrom slams into Charizard from above slamming him down onto the roof of the building.

Ash watches in horror as Charizard's Mega evolution fades immediately and he lays motionless on the roof.

"Charizard!" Ash holds his breath and runs to him. Ash holds his head. When he feels Charizard stir slightly, he breathes again and quickly returns him to the Pokeball before he can be harmed anymore.

Inside her soul, she feels the stirring before she even sees the battle. Off in the distance, she watches purple beams of light penetrating the rainy clouds. There are lightning strikes and blasts of fire. Something massive is happening across the sea and Misty is willing to place bets that Ash is caught in the midst of it all.

Her eyes leave the distant battle for a moment to stare at Celebi. The little green fairy stops next to her shoulder and tugs on it.

"This is it?" Misty asks returning her gaze to the sea. "We're needed there?"

The little green fairy only nods and darts off over the sea.

"Wait!" Misty yells, but Celebi is much too far away to hear her. She hesitates. It isn't her job to save the world, but she believes it is her job to save Ash.
