"Why the struggle, why the strain?"

Lucy and Peter shared a wary glance as they approached Y/N, who was sitting in the corner of the Stone Table chamber, her legs up to her knees as she quietly sang to herself.

"Why make trouble, why make scenes?
Why go against the grain, why swim upstream?
"

Lucy reached out a hand, but Peter reached out his arm to block the motion. He couldn't tell if Y/N wanted to be left alone right now, but she hadn't seemed to notice them yet, off in her own world, so he stayed there a few moments.

"It ain't, it ain't, it ain't no use.
You're bound, you're bound, you're bound to lose.
What's done, what's done, what's done is done.
That's the way the river runs.
"

Both Lucy and Peter understood now. Y/N had been hit hard by the great losses in the failed attack on Miraz's castle, but she hadn't openly reacted to it yet- this was her way of coping. After a few moments of silence, she looked up and saw the oldest and the youngest Pevensie looking down worriedly at her. With a weary smile, she stood and reached out to both of them for a hug, which they gladly gave her.

"I'm sorry you had to see that. I hope it doesn't make you think any less of me-"

"It would never."

Lucy and Peter smiled at each other as they chorused their truth, then back at Y/N.

Friends don't judge friends when they're down. Friends offer a hug and a listening ear.

So that's exactly what they did.
