A Nightmare

There's a Raven at my window,
silent and unmoving,
with ebony plume and dreaming eyes.
My nerve is uprooting.

There's a Snake in the far corner,
coiled up and waiting,
with venomous fangs and hateful glare.
Great tension it's creating.

There's a Rat under my mattress,
huddled up and hiding,
with foul breath and naked tail.
My confidence is sliding.

There's a Worm inside my pillow,
restless and unthinking,
with slimy skin and earthy scent.
My stomach is now sinking.

There are Maggots in my bed sheets,
curious and crawling,
with small white forms and rotting smell.
For Mother I am calling.

There's a Kitten on my dresser,
innocent and sitting,
with sable fur and dreadful gaze.
My heart now is flitting.

There's a Spirit in the doorway,
transparent and gleaming,
with hungry eyes and fleshless bones.
I cannot stop screaming.

There's a Woman in the shadow,
terrible and creeping,
with wicked grin and knife in hand.
Forever I am sleeping.
