In fact, they didn't seem all that bad.
John Booker Routledge was the one she knew best, if you could even say that. He worked on the boat owned by Ward Cameron and usually passed her house on his way there. He had her parents wrapped around his little finger, too, since it seemed impossible for him to walk past without them giving him the attention he desired. Maybe it was strategic. John B knew they would stop for a chat and dote on him. Maybe he thrived on that. Maybe he needed it. Regardless, Sonny would watch from her window, sometimes forced to reciprocate the nods he would send her from afar.
She wondered if he'd intentionally been named after a crap Beach Boys song, or whether that was just a coincidence. She didn't know him enough to find out. Nobody did, really. That didn't mean everyone on the island didn't like to pretend that they did, though.
In actuality, they only knew John B as the boy whose father disappeared a year ago — likely dead at sea — while his uncle jetted to the mainland, probably never to come back. Most of the Kooks decided they didn't like John B way before that, just because of his attitude and where he came from. Kooks didn't like any south side kids, especially the Pogues.
