My name is Bobby, and I was born with Spina Bifida. Spina Bifida is
A birth defect in which a developing baby's spinal cord fails to develop properly.
It occurs when a developing baby's spinal cord fails to develop or close properly while in the womb.
Symptoms can sometimes be seen on the skin above the spinal defect. They include an abnormal tuft of hair, a birthmark, or protruding spinal cord tissue.
When treatment is necessary, it's done through surgery to close the defect. Other treatments focus on managing complications. I am paralyzed from the waist down, so my whole life has been spent in a wheelchair.
When people see that I am in a wheelchair, they automatically think that I am helpless. For the most part, I like to try and do as much for myself as I can. Opening doors, if able, transferring, etc. When people see me opening doors, they try and help. I try and be polite and say that I can do it, but, some people insist on helping anyways. I'd rather they didn't, but, I don't want to be rude, so, I never say anything.
