This was written for a "Butterfly Project" in 8th grade. We were learning about WWII and had an assignment to write a poem and decorated a butterfly that represented a person who died during that time. As the unit went on, more and more butterflies disappeared(represents how many people died).

This is a two voice poem. The first speaker is a person in a gulag. The second speaker can be either a soldier or a bystander. It is written for different interpretations on who the second voice might belong to. Trust me, the layout looks better but on desktop than the mobile version of Wattpad!]

Hello?

Can anybody hear me?

I can hear you.

Does anyone not listen to
My cries of sorrow?

I do.

Why do they all look at us while we
Suffer in pain? Why don't they help us?

I do want to help, but I mustn't
Or else I'll be punished too.

Do they all enjoy watching us suffer?

They do, but I don't.
It hurts to watch you all suffer,
But what can I do?

All they have to do to help us is
Stand Up to those terrible things
And say "Stop!"

How many people out there know that
Most of us Burn by the hands of them?

No, they do not.
They don't know
That most of you burn
At the hands of
Me.
