Breakfast was soon over, which felt odd to you. Usually it seemed to last more time than it did, but joking around and laughing did make time go by faster. Time flies when you're having fun. You chuckled mentally, but deep down, you felt saddened, because time rarely passed this fast with Regulus.
Sometimes it did, but usually the both of you barely spoke about light subjects like you did today. Regulus was usually busy reading updates of the dark lord on the Daily Prophet every morning, and you liked to eat in silence, but having a loud, fun time with the Marauders and Lily wasn't unpleasant at all.
" Shall we go? I don't want to be late for class again. Especially not the last week before winter break." Remus said, closing his book and putting it in his bag. " So please guys, don't cause so much trouble this week."
" No promises." James chuckled, throwing an arm over Sirius as he said that. The two boys snickered and laughed devilishly, as if they were planning something far too great to share with the group.
You stood up when the Marauders and Lily did too, and the six of you headed out of the Great Hall, you walking the furthest behind in the group. Lily excused herself from the group to go meet up with her other friends before class, and you mentally cursed. For Salazar's sake. She just left me here alone, following the Marauders. Great. You sighed, rolling you eyes.
" (L/n)!" Sirius exclaimed, slowing down so he'd be walking at your side.
" Black. Is there anything you need?" You cleared your throat, looking in front of you instead of towards him and trying to sound as casual as possible, but you were slightly panicking on the inside.
" We have potions this morning." He said.
" Well observed. I'm glad to know you remember your classes." You joked bluntly. He rolled his eyes. " You're so rude to me. I was actually coming to be nice to you and all. But oh well." Sirius said dramatically, starting to leave. You knew he was kidding, so you didn't do anything.
" Wait." He stopped in his tracks and turned around to face you. " You're not going to stop me so I can tell you what I wanted to?"
You shook your head. " Nope. Sorry Black, but your plans don't work on me."
" I figured." He sighed and walked backwards until he and you were once again walking side by side. " I was wondering if you'd like to walk there together. I mean- we are partners for the project and all." He shrugged casually. " And I know you don't like me being late, so..."
" ... Sure. Yes. Okay. That sounds great." You stuttered, face palming mentally. Get it together, (y/n)! Talk like a normal human being for once for Salazar's sake! You huffed in your head. " Do you have your things? Because I already brought mine."
Sirius nodded. " Surprisingly so. Remus reminded us all. He wants to spend this week without detention since it's the last before the holidays."
Detention. Oh great. You huffed. Apparently, many things reminded you of detention for the last weekend before Christmas at Hogwarts lately. " Well, I bet a couple galleons that wont work. You four have a talent for getting in trouble. It's astonishing."
" Oh? So you're telling me you pay attention when I get into trouble? I'm flattered (l/n)." Sirius smirked.
You rolled your eyes. " The whole school knows when the four of you get in trouble." You emphasized on 'four'. " There's either fireworks in the Great Hall or the grand staircase. Or Peeves praising out your names. Oh, I almost forgot my personal favorite: professor McGonagall not even being surprised anymore stomping through the hallways."
" You've just proven my point. You do pay attention to when we get in trouble. Very detailed explanation you gave me, really. You're going to have to do better to hide the fact that you don't pay attention to me." He wiggled his eyebrows.
You scowled at him. " I will hex you."
Sirius stepped back away from you with his hands raised in front of him in surrender. " Okay, okay. I don't doubt that you will." He chuckled.
" Oh my gosh. Just kiss already!" James huffed from a couple yards in front of the both of you. Remus shook his head and swatted him in the head with his book.
Your eyes widened and you looked away from Sirius, your confidence suddenly gone. He cleared his throat loudly and continued to walk as if nothing had happened. " So... potions?" He offered.
You nodded your head. " Yeah. Potions. Let's go." You stuttered walking past the three other Marauders and towards the dungeons, Sirius catching up a couple feet behind. It's not Sirius that I'll hex, it's Potter! You exclaimed mentally. Oh for Salazar's sake, that was so embarrassing... Way to go, I made a fool out of myself in front of Sirius. Again.
Sirius caught up with you but didn't say anything the short way left to potions, which surprised you, he would've said a snarky comment by now, you had been sure of it. As you walked into the classroom, professor Slughorn looked towards you with a puzzled expression, which you returned until you realized who was next to you. The other son from the house of Black.
" Good morning, professor." You slightly waved.
" Good morning, miss (l/n), mister Black." He nodded towards the both of you.
You took your seat next to Sirius, waiting for the few other students, including James, Peter, and Remus. You felt bad for Lupin, who had wanted a detention-free week, he was a great student except he was late a lot and was always getting into trouble with his friends.
" What did I tell you, Black?" You whispered to your side where Sirius sat as the other Marauders finally arrived in class minutes later.
" Yes, yes. Whatever." He sighed. " At least it wasn't an official bet."
You chuckled, but your smile faded away as another person entered the classroom even later than James, Remus, and Peter: Regulus. You were surprised, to say the least. Regulus was never late for anything. He was always on time, and sometimes early to class and any meeting or gathering, always.
Your eyes followed his silhouette as he apologized emotionlessly to professor Slughorn, who said he'd let it pass this time because it had been the first time he'd ever been late to class. Regulus' cold gaze flickered towards you and the both of you held the eye contact seriously, without a hint of emotion in your faces, it lasted for the whole time he walked to sit next to his assigned partner: Peter.
You shook your head and turned back to look at Sirius, who had obviously seen the whole thing. " I'd appreciate if you'd retain yourself from asking, if you were going to." You huffed, opening your notebook.
" I wasn't going to." He replied, taking out his notes as well, but not before holding his hair in a manbun with the help of his wand.
" Alright. Let's uh- talk about progress then." You cleared your throat. " The potion's done, except now we have to wait for the month to be over because of the mandrake leaf, and also for the next electric storm. I say we've gotten pretty far. I would've never thought."
" What's that supposed to mean?" Sirius chuckled, blowing away a strand of hair that had undone itself from his manbun.
" Nothing." You smiled with fake innocence. " Of course I was confident from the start that the partnered project would go perfect."
He rolled his eyes. " Not that again. I thought we were past the 'me being irresponsible' argument."
" I have no idea what you're talking about, Black. Me? Say something like that? I would never." You chuckled.
Sirius looked at you with an unamused expression and stayed quiet. You were the first to break the eye contact, which surprised you, since you were an expert at holding defiant stares, you couldn't bring yourself to do the same with Sirius.
" Well, let's get working, shall we?" You cleared your throat.
" I thought you'd never ask." Sirius replied, sarcasm dripping off every word.
