The story takes place on an alternative version of Earth. So there isn't sci-fi or fantasy aspect at the beginning at all. The main action will begin after he gets into the ocean.
The original goal of 10 million reputation points can be pretty much ignored because it doesn't have anything to do with a eternal death like the system likes to tell. It's just a milestone for a next evolution.
Don't expect character development. There is a certain level of character development but it doesn't affect the story in any way. Fang Yun once said to himself that he won't eat any humans and he sticks with it (and it's not like they offer him lots of points later on...)
There are also chapters told from perspective of humans. One or two are nice and give you the information you will sometimes want to know about the world but it's also extremely annoying in some cases.
