KYNES WONDERED IF her rage was enough to splinter every tree in the entire forest.

And if it was, she considered what would become of any residents. There would be plenty of carnage —to which she was not opposed —and all mortals would perish. Good, she thought. She would finally be able to get rid of that pesky, lying human.

She squared her shoulders, took a run-up, and then punched a nearby tree. The trunk shattered where her fist had collided with it, before the top half broke away and keeled over to thud to the ground.

Dissatisfied, she moved on to another tree.

Why had she not thrown an icicle?

She could have killed him right then and there, with just one speared bit of ice directly through his skull. The promise to keep him alive then surfaced within her mind, though, and she growled.

The tree's trunk cracked and burst into thin branches as though it had been struck by lightning.

"Leave the trees alone," Adam's voice then said from behind her, at the door of the cottage. "And please allow me to explain."

Kynes whirled around, seething. Her veins ignited, glowing with a cautious intensity. "You fought in the fucking war to slaughter my people and countless others —what is there to explain?" she snarled.
