you glared at the screen as the 'defeat' sign flashed. you sipped on your water and laid back in your chair as the xp screen came up, "thats the sixth loss tonight." you looked over at the clock, 1:57 am. you ignored how late it was for a school night as you closed out of the game, "sorry ko. but im not losing anymore sr tonight." "yeah" he yawned slightly as you heard his mouse click out the game as well. "why do you stay up so late if you have practice later?" he didnt answer for a second as you assumed he was taking a water break too, "i dunno. its the only time youre online." you put your feet in the chair and hugged your knees to your chest as you stared at the call screen, "dont you have other people you play with though?"

"hmm, i mean yeah. but i prefer you. you arent loud, youre pretty good, and i know you." 

you felt your face heat up slightly at the words, 'but i prefer you.' you couldnt help the slight grin on your face as the boy kept talking, "oh yeah, theres a training camp in a few weeks or something. so ill be at the school for about a week." you hummed in response as you messed with the little nick knacks that littered your desk, 

"i doubt kuroos gonna let you stay up all night playing games either-" you could tell by the way he spoke that he had a plan, "what he doesnt know wont hurt him." you laughed a little as you inspected a little cat figure you had placed on the corner or your mouse pad, "you were trying to say something the other night before i hung up. what was it?" what you didnt know was that kenma practically choked on his water, but you did hear him cough very loudly before he muted his mic. "k-kozume? are you okay?" he hesitantly unmuted himself as he cleared his throat,

"uhm. i juat wanted to say that i hope you are o-okay?" he sounded unsure of himself as you made a confused face ,"hmm. okay, the what did kuroo say that got you all wound up?"

"he reminded me of a science test-"

he sounded slightly more sure of himself this time as you just nodded to yourself, "uh-huh. ok." it was silent for a minute besides the occasional yawn and cough.

"i know youre lying. ko. just tell me!"

"pay me 2 million bells in animal crossing and ill consider it."

your eyes widened as you immediately pulled out your switch, "but,  you know the island i just started working on right now is time-travel free right?"

he laughed a little before continuing, 

"and you have to have your debts to nook payed off."

you gasped a little as you checked how badly you were in debt, it was pretty bad. you panicked for a moment before sighing in defeat,

"fine. ill pay up. well, eventually."

the boy smiled slightly to himself before pulling out his own switch to play as well. both of you played in mostly silence as you just sat in each others company. it was actually pretty calming until you checked the clock again, 

"SHIT KO, ITS FUCKING 3:45 IN THE DAMN MORNING-" 

"huh? oh-" his voice was slightly raspy and tired as he spoke, "well goodnight i guess-"

"PROMISE ME YOU ARE GOING TO BED RIGHT NOW-"

"alright alright. stop yelling before you wake up your whole neighborhood."

you didnt wait for a goodbye as you quickly hung up and threw yourself onto your bed, "i really need to keep track of time better." you fell asleep quicker than you realized, and eventually, all was quiet in your room.

until of course your alarm sang out to you in the most horrid way possible.
