Something had come over Sehun as he stared at the phone screen. It was past midnight and he lay flat on his bed, swiping through the several text messages, cute gifs and calls from Hazel; all of which he had ignored. He knew that maybe tonight too she might cry, but it was for better. He felt an urge to undo his deeds, an urge to type replies to all the unattended messages but he held back.
Overhead, the ceiling fan was rotating in slow circles. He buried his head in the pillow, muttering desperate pleas which fell on deaf ears of God for he now wished that he could have reacted differently. He wished that he hadn't left her crying and stranded on the ground as his car drove away that day because after that day, Hazel was absent to school.
He felt lost in a maze of thoughts wondering why he had always made wrong choices and why he had wronged her when a part of his feelings—sadness and happiness was entangled with Hazel's heart. Now that his tiny portion of happiness was gone, he was once again left in a dark dungeon where he found it hard to stay sane. Each time his eyes closed, her form appeared and he spent sleepless nights recalling her crying face, her voice, her laughter and her innocent smiles.
He missed her.
But he was aware that what he had attempted was foolish, like putting two legs on two different boats at the same time. Maybe he should have put an end to it when he first realized Hazel's fondness towards him. Like the times when she brought delicious dumplings and shared with him during lunch or when she constantly fished for compliments.
He'd never known why he had smiled when she went out of her way to see him happy. He'd never known why he'd blushed the day he stumbled upon his name and hers written together at the last pages of her notebook. He'd never known why he hadn't been himself around her.
The room was pitch dark, the phone light being the only light that illuminated his face. His fingers stopped at the last audio message that she had sent. He curiously tapped on the play button and it started with a long pause.
"I- uh, I..." she sobbed a little. He took a deep breath and closed his dull, sunken eyes. His chest ached with guilt but tears wouldn't fall, he was too numb to cry.
"I miss you..." the voice note ended. He ran his fingers through his messy locks feeling worrisome. He took one last glance of the picture: him, her and the unicorn plushy which she held. He switched off the phone and rubbed his forehead. Being sleep deprived tonight as well, his eyes remained open, reminiscing the events that followed after leaving Hazel at her house and reaching his apartment that night.
He had parked his car in the parking lot and got into the elevator. But when elevator door slid open, at the far end of the corridor, he spotted Mr. Suho standing right outside his apartment with folded arms.
