missing home

if i close my eyes
i can imagine
i'm not half-way across the world

i can picture
the fish racing through the pond
tv blasting all night long

if i close my eyes
i can imagine
the rain washing away this lonely pain

i can picture
pool water on the tips of my toes
smell of sunlight upon my nose

if i close my eyes
mom is reading and dad is swinging
his arms back and forth and back and forth

i can picture
my little brother's buck-toothed smile
and laugh that makes living worthwhile

if i close my eyes
i can hear the knock from his side of the room
and i can hear myself
knocking back

once i open my eyes, i'm no longer home
and realize
the knocks i hear back
are nothing but my own.
